When I saw the shimmery, sexy eyes at Alexander Wang’s spring 2012 show, I knew I had to find a way to recreate the look myself. Which is why I was so excited when I came across Eyeko’s Fat Eye Sticks. These giant eye color sticks are the ideal easy-to-use product for geting either a smoldering or eye-brightening look.

If 2011’s big eye trend was the cat eye, 2012 is gearing up to be the year of the “kitten eye.” It’s a less extreme and slightly easier-to-apply version of the cat eye but it’s still retro cute. In fact, I’ve been unknowingly wearing it for months in an attempt to create the cat-eye myself.
The LA Times spoke with celebrity makeup artist Kayleen McAdams, who says “a cat eye is a thicker line across the lid where a kitten eye is more about the little flick at the end, though it still works to define the eye.” To get the look, McAdams starts by tracing the top lashes with a pencil liner and creating a small upturned flick at the end of the eye. Keep the end of the flick in line with the end of your eyebrow. Next, trace over your pencil liner with a liquid or gel liner, making sure to keep a steady hand. For extra oomph, place a few individual fake lashes at the outside of your lashes.

Amp up your look with some striking liner and very little else
As much as we’re suckers for over-the-top lip colors and theatrical eye makeup, most days we just want a look that’s subtly sexy. The easiest way to spice things up? Accentuate your eyes with some sultry liner and leave everything else au natural. The result is a bold gaze that’s assertive, not aggressive.
In honor of Beyonce’s amazing “Countdown” video, here’s a countdown of our favorite beauty looks from said video.
5. Bubblegum pink lips, winged liner, and orange nails:
4. Bright Liner (get the look here):
3. 50s-style hair, piled on top and secured with a colorful sash:
2. Sexy and sophisticated with shimmery shadow and a retro bob:
1. Sweet with bangs and a ponytail. Want to be friends, Beyonce?

We’ve got the ’60s on the brain here in the office lately. Not only are many Birchbox staffers die-hard Mad Men fans (just look at graphic designer Charlie), but now we’re also hearing a lot of good things about the new shows Pan Am and The Playboy Club. Given that we adore everything about this super-chic decade (especially the fashion!), it was only natural that we flipped over this picture of Twiggy from a Gloss Daily post yesterday. Truly, it was only a matter of time before we decided to try the iconic look ourselves. Here’s our game plan:

Step 1: Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner. Use a small liner brush to paint a thick curved line along your crease and across your top lash line. Also use this brush to create an exaggerated spiky lower lashline.
Step 2: FAUX Estelle Lashes. Apply false lashes for oodles of volume and wide open eyes.
Step 3: Anastasia Lash Lifting Mascara. Coat lashes with mascara and direct wand through bottom lashes.

Happy Friday and welcome to another reading list! NYFW is finally over, which means we can get back to a normal (whatever that means) schedule and catch up on some of the stories we didn’t have time for last week.

Now that cold weather is moving in, pick up some new items from our shop to help you transition to fall.

Dior Velvet Eyes, $59, sephora.com
There are plenty of people on staff who are great at applying eyeliner—but I am not one of them. I am long overdue for a tutorial from Lorelei, who is a pro at the cat eye look, but even with her expert tutelage, I know I’ll need a lot of practice.
In the meantime, I could test out Dior’s brand-new Velvet Eyes, a set of multi-wear eyeliner appliqués made from velvet. The four looks are definitely best suited for risk-takers (some have Swarovski crystals) or makeup mavens, but I adore the concept: just peel off the silicone backing and adjust them to your eye shape. While they are sticky to begin with, the kit also comes with glue if you want a rock solid hold. When you’re done, simply peel them off your eyes and place them back on the sheet.
What do you think of this idea? Would you be up for trying these fancy stickers?

If you’d rather the real deal, pick up stila’s Stay All Day Liquid Liner.

While it seems like just yesterday that I was digging my shorts out of wardrobe hibernation, summer is sadly nearing its end. And as this season winds down and, I’m thinking about what in my closet and in my makeup bag I need to utilize before the sunny days are here no more.
Aside from my neon pink chinos, which I’ve used a ton, I have a bright green pencil liner (similar to the shade above) that I really need to put to use in the next few weeks. Sure, I could totally sport the hue in the dead of winter, but there is something so fresh about a super-bright pop of color on your eye in the summertime. Plus, I’d really love to contrast it with a neutral or all white outfit.
What summer beauty trend have you been waiting to try? A messy updo? A candy-colored polish? An electric lipstick? Now is the time to rock it!

One liner shade that works year round, but is still colorful, is bright blue. We love stila’s Stay All Day Liquid Liner in Indigo.

One essential thing that I learned during my summer here interning at Birchbox (today’s my last day!) is that finding great products requires help. For example, let’s say you’re looking for eyeliner, but you have a ton of questions. Which type and shade will work best for you? What is the correct way to use an eyeliner pencil? Are there any cool liner trends happening? Thankfully, Birchbox is here to not only sell you the best of the best, but also to guide you through how to incorporate those products into your beauty regimen. To demonstrate how Birchbox helps you narrow down the choices, we’ll use the example of an imaginary girl (let’s call her Veronica) who is on the hunt for an eyeliner.
Which eyeliner is the best one out there for V?
Well, we carry multiple liners. When surfing through the Birchbox Shop, you can search by category, and see all the eye products available. When you click through to each liner, you might not immediately understand what makes it different, but luckily there is an entire detailed page written by the a staff member that has actually experimented with the product and discovered its best features.
What are the best ways for V to use her new liner?
Once you’ve found the right liner for you in the shop, there’s an entire section of informative articles and video tutorials on our site to help you with how to use it. The Tricks to Make Eyes Look Bigger story details several easy ways to make your eyes pop and a recent Power of Three shows you what to pair with your liner.
V wants to keep up with the trends. What’s the latest and greatest in the world of liner?
Every day we blog about the most recent happenings in the beauty world. You can scope out what celebs are doing, find new and innovative products, and read our personal testimonials of products we love. Recently, Kara found a unique new liner palette, and Lorelei found a model with a bright-eyed look.

I don’t know about you, but I have a serious obsession with black eyeliner. That said, yesterday when I came across a new product from UltraFlesh called Black 5-Color-Palette that offers up five different types of black liner in one handy-dandy case, I immediately thought, ‘who needs that many choices?’ But then I realized that I would totally utilize that many inky shades. A girl needs options because a day at the office, brunch with the fam, a hot date, and a night out with the girls all require different looks.
The set of five colors is $39 and comes in layers. You get wet/dry black liner, wet/dry black shimmer liner, a black smudge liner, a black kohl pencil, a black shimmer pencil, and a mini pro angle liner brush. I like this because you have everything in one place and who wants to keep track of five different things if all you need is one? Plus, this would be great for me to bring to work so I can easily add more oomph to my eyes after the day is over and before heading out to happy hour or dinner.
