How To: Get The Perfect Cat Eye
I love experimenting with eye makeup, but sometimes all that swatching, blending, and layering just to make a tiny mistake and have to start over is just too frustrating.
This is precisely why I love the cat eye (or kitten eye). Sure, drawing a steady line with a heavy liquid liner brush can be intimidating, but the look goes best with minimal-to-no shadow, so if you slip up (or can’t get that winged angle just right), simply remove and start again. Our Birchbox France editors wanted to make this statement eye as bold and easy to get as possible. Take a peek at this how-to video and your cat eyes will be more glam than mod-eyed beauties like Twiggy and Sophia Loren.
Get to know the innovator-in-chief behind one of our fave liquid eyeliner brands: Eyeko!
Super fun fact: Professional It girl Alexa Chung turns to Eyeko’s Skinny Liquid Eyeliner to score her signature sultry cat eyes. After lusting after Alexa’s hip makeup and gushing about this liner to pretty much anyone who would listen, we decided it was high time we caught up with the lady behind the magic: Eyeko founder Nina Leykind.
In the latest edition of our Innovator-in-Chief series, Nina gave us the inside scoop on a must-have mascara, her favorite beauty icons, and even came up with a new product idea mid-interview.

Nerd alert: one of our favorite things to do is read the customer reviews in the Birchbox Shop. You all are an opinionated bunch—and we like it! We especially love the love letters you write to your favorite products. (Though we’re still waiting on the haikus and iambic pentameter.) In honor of our anniversary month, we’re highlighting extrasweet customer serenades to three of our top-selling products of all time:

Alexa Chung Teams Up With Eyeko Cosmetics
One of fashion’s favorite “it” girls, Alexa Chung, is growing her resumé. Announced today, the style maven has inked a deal to be an advisor for London-based Eyeko Cosmetics. According to Chung, the partnership with founders Max and Nina Leykind is currently very collaborative and easygoing: “I send images and different inspirations to Max and Nina and we go from there. It’s quite free form at the moment.”
As soon as we heard the news, we knew this was a match made in beauty-style heaven. While we love Chung’s quirky wardrobe, we’ve always admired her signature cat eye beauty look. There’s no denying she’s good with liquid liner and the fact that’s she’s also a Brit makes this celebrity endorsement a fantastic fit.
The first collab between Chung and the brand will be a limited-edition $45 set that includes a waterproof black eyeliner and waterproof black mascara. It will go on sale in November at Selfridges, Sephora, and Space NK.
We know Birchbox subscribers love Eyeko’s Skinny Liquid Liner, but here’s another customer love note for a traditional soap that changed her life.
Temperatures are on the rise here in New York, which makes commuting even more unbearable. To keep our makeup from melting faster than an ice cream cone at summer camp, we rely on products that fend off shine and have serious staying power. Here are four of our favorites that we’ll be using to beat the heat all summer long:
How to Wear Blue Eye Makeup Without Looking Like You Stepped out of the 80s: Birchbox Intern Diaries
I could not be more excited that some spring weather is finally here. With a new season, comes new beauty trends. Case in point: blue eyeshadow dominated the Spring ‘13 runways but we know for most women it conjures up images of bad 80s Glamour Shots. Not to worry, it is possible to wear blue eye makeup without looking cheesy. Watch to see two different blue looks on Birchbox staffers Bre and Juliette.
What 80’s trends do you hope make a comeback? Let us know in the comments.

The Quintessential Spring Fashion and Beauty Look
Spring and summer are my happiest times of year because I can wear my favorite clothes. (Note: I am an u-g-l-y cold weather dresser—I spend the entirety of the winter bundled in a rather unflattering Patagonia puffer.) With warm days just around the corner—fingers crossed—I am ready to shed my un-chic layers and embrace my most beloved trend of the season: chambray.
I’ve spent a lot of time in the Madewell store recently (everyone on Birchbox’s mailing list got a $25 off $75+ and I took full advantage) and as a result, I’m really inspired to layer denim on denim—on denim! If you and I happen to have my same taste, then you’re in luck: I’ve shopped out my fave Madewell look from head to toe.
- Jean Vest: There’s something really badass about a shrunken denim vest. It adds edge to even the girliest of outfits and is just as great over long sleeves as it is over tank tops.
- Perfect Chambray Ex-boyfriend Shirt: The loose fit and light wash make this a versatile essential.
- Skinny Skinny Ankle Jean in Black Frost Wash: If you don’t have a great pair of slim-fit black denim in your closet, run (don’t walk) and pick up a pair stat. These go with everything.
