This New York Fashion Week, we have a new blog contributor—and she’s as pro as they come. Model Alana Zimmer (whose resume includes regular Vogue editorials, walking in couture shows like Armani and Jean Paul Gaultier, and starring in Nicole Miller’s fall ad campaign) is taking exclusive backstage pics for us at all the shows she’s in this season. Check back each day to see NYFW from a model’s point of view!

Loving the crop tops!
You’ve probably heard by now that we’re teaming up with Glamour for our July Birchbox. To help celebrate this awesome partnership, the gracious Girls in the Beauty Department will be sharing their beauty expertise with us for an entire month. Lucky us!
Summer (a.k.a. patio drinking season) is upon us, which means that the likelihood that you’ll be staying up past your bedtime on school nights ranges from 30% (Tuesdays) to 70% (Thursdays). If you’ve suddenly found yourself in the market for a stellar under-eye circle zapper, a magic eye de-puffing product or even just some miraculous concealer that makes you look as though you spent a quiet evening at home, drinking water and watching French documentaries (as opposed to, say, watching the clock strike twelve while enjoying some al fresco libations with some rowdy friends), you’ve come to the right place.
As both the weather and my social calendar have warmed up, Estee Lauder’s Idealist Cooling Eye Illuminator has become my newest makeup bag bestie. Slightly tinted and totally soothing, it brightens up my eyes without making them look sparkly or heavy with product. And every morning I dab some on, I think:
A) Oh man, this makes my skin feel like butter. Like fancy French butter. I’m hungry.
B) I did not need that last glass of chardonnay.
C) I wonder if it’s possible to bathe in this. As in take a bath. In a pool of Eye Illuminator. Never mind, that’s a gross idea. I need coffee.
D) I’ve gotta tell the blog ladies about this. It’s like the real deal. Is anyone else using this? Jeez, it’s fantastic.
Notable Quotables is a weekly series featuring a great quote. Whether it’s the founder of a beloved beauty brand, an eccentric makeup artist making headlines, or even a super-stylish celebrity, our favorite tastemakers always have something worth sharing.
If we had to name a royal family of beauty, the Lauders would be it. Proving that fact, Estée’s grandaughter, Aerin, is set to launch a new lifestyle empire shortly. The style and image director for Estée Lauder spoke to WWD about breaking out with her own beauty, home, and accessory collections and here’s what she had to say:
“I like to joke that I’ve been in the beauty industry for 42 years and actually working for 20…My goal was to create a line that was all about modern, effortless beauty. It’s very much a lifestyle brand, which I think is very much how Estée started. It was always about lifestyle photography and an environment and a world. It’s not necessarily an age group—it’s a state of mind.” —Aerin Lauder

We fell hard for Natalie Alcala last fall, when the LA-based writer and blogger spent a week guest blogging for us. In fact, we loved her posts so much that we asked her to be a contributing editor. In addition to blogging for us once a week, she’ll also be writing for the Birchbox Magazine and keeping us up to speed on all things fashion, beauty, and fun.
In honor of Mother’s Day, I sat down with my beauty idol to learn more about her best secrets, the discontinued products that she wishes would be reissued, and the one tried-and-true product that she’s been using since high school. (Try this Q&A with your mom on Sunday—you’ll learn so much!)
What was your earliest beauty memory?
“I used to really love flipping through Cosmopolitan magazine—that’s where I first discovered vanity. My favorite model was Cristina Ferrare. I also loved Marilyn Monroe and Sophia Loren. I even used to fake Marilyn’s beauty mark with a pencil!”
So funny! Who taught you how to put on makeup?
“I think I taught myself really, but I also got some tips from your Auntie Esther [her sister-in-law]. I first started experimenting with mascara because I was so amazed by how long it made my eyelashes look.”
Last week, beauty brand Estée Lauder announced that 23-year-old model Arizona Muse will be the newest face to represent their skincare, makeup, and fragrance lines.
We were so excited to hear that one of our favorite bloggers, Emily Schuman of Cupcakes and Cashmere, has teamed up with Estée Lauder. The one woman tour-de-force will be blogging for the beauty brand on a special section created just for her starting next Monday.
