A BB Cream That Adjusts to Your Skin Tone

BB creams are all the rage right now and it seems like every major beauty brand is coming out with their own version. But so far, the trend has really centered around women with Caucasian and Asian skin tones and there hasn’t been a ton of options out there for those of us with darker skin. I, for one, had never tried a BB cream before because I had always assumed there wasn’t a shade that would blend well with my skin. After doing a little research, however, I decided to test drive a few.

Raging Red-Eye and How to Cure It

While it was nice being stuck in LA all week, I’m extremely happy to be back. I missed my team! The one bummer: I took a red-eye last night, which means I’m feeling pretty rough today. I’m trying not to look it, though. Here’s what I’m using:

Dr. Jart Beauty Balm: It’s safe to say that I’m pretty obsessed with this stuff. I used it daily in LA in lieu of tinted moisturizer and loved the way it gave my skin a soft finish. Today, I’m wearing it underneath copious amounts of Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint.

Laura Geller Blush-n-Brighten in Apricot Berry: When I feel blah, I apply blush. Lots of blush. Extra points for shimmer. This warm peach shade counteracts any plane-induced sallowness and makes me feel more alive.

Anastasia Lash Lifting Mascara: Sleepy eyes need a little help. Curl lashes, apply mascara. Apply more mascara.

Smashbox Photo Op Undereye Brightener: Instead of concealer, I use this pearly pink-toned highlighter to brighten dark circles. It blends in nicely and I can layer on the concealer if necessary.

Visine: Lots and lots of Visine.

Falling for BB Cream

My Chinese grandmother claims that spaghetti originated in Asia, and that Mollie is actually a Chinese name. Seeing as how she gives Asian culture the credit for anything awesome, she’d be vindicated to know that beauty’s latest It product was first popularized in Korea. BB Creams (short for Blemish Balm or Beauty Balm) have been incredibly popular in Asia for years, but only recently have they started cropping up stateside. They vary from brand to brand, but the basic premise is this: everything you need, from skincare to makeup, in a single product. They usually have active anti-aging or healing ingredients, hydrating elements, and SPF, plus a slight tint to even out skin. While some people love the simplicity of them, others swear that they give skin an amazing glow.

I was skeptical until Jenn Falik swung by the office the other day looking absolutely radiant. Now, since I know that she sleeps even less than I do, there had to be some sort of miraculous product behind her luminous complexion. And there was — BB Cream. Falik is newly obsessed with Dr. Jart’s Beauty Balm, which is an oil-free moisturizer with SPF and a sheer tint. That was all the convincing I needed — I got myself a tube of Dr. Jart’s BB Cream that day. It has a thick texture that melts in without being greasy, and a light flesh color that blends in completely. I’ve been using it in place of my moisturizer and primer and it works like a charm—it keeps my skin soft and moisturized, and allows me to skip the tinted moisturizer. Plus, think of all the time I’m saving! My grandma would be proud.
