We fell hard for Natalie Alcala last fall, when the LA-based writer and blogger spent a week guest blogging for us. In fact, we loved her posts so much that we asked her to be a contributing editor. In addition to blogging for us once a week, she’ll also be writing for the Birchbox Magazine and keeping us up to speed on all things fashion, beauty, and fun.
In addition to all things nebula-inspired, metallics always make my heart skip a beat. I rocked the look above this past New Year’s Eve and kept the gilded theme going with bold treasures by LAS Jewelry, VeraMeat and TOMTOM. (I don’t have the exact shade name, sadly, but it’s by Color Club and I received it in a Birchbox a few months back.) Besides making an instant statement, what’s rad about this trend is that it’s a great way to rock bling sans actual jewelry, which is necessary for a writer like myself. (Try typing for hours with fussy rings on and you’ll see what I mean.) If you’re ready to give your digits a futuristic upgrade, here are a few of my favorite shades of the aluminum foil-inspired variety.
It can be a bit of a black hole trying to sort through all the anti-aging beauty products on the market. That’s why we look to the all-knowing Jonell Copeland, the editor of the Ageist Beauty, a blog that focuses on dishing out beauty advice to ladies aged 35-50. This week, she’s giving us all the deets on her holiday season musts!
I’m not exaggerating when I say I have enough nail polishes to paint a Fiat 500. There are only certain polishes that are special enough for New Year’s Eve and other special celebrations. These are the ones that instantly put me in a party frame of mind:

Emma shows off her new bangs at the ELLE Women in Hollywood Awards a few weeks ago. (Photo: Em-stoners.tumblr.com)
I’d like to think that Emma Stone and I are secret soul twins: not only do we share the same birthday (she turns 24 today), but we’re both addicted to sporting bangs. Recently, the fresh-faced actress lost her signature side-swept bangs in favor of a piecey, forehead-grazing fringe.
I totally envy Emma’s ability to constantly switch things up and keep us anticipating her next transformation—just look at her many roles in everything from Zombieland toThe Help. We can’t wait to see her next year in the crime drama Gangster Squad, which reunites her with her Crazy, Stupid Love co-star (and total heartthrob) Ryan Gosling. But until then, help celebrate the star’s big 2-4 by clicking through to see some of her most memorable red carpet looks!
What’s missing in the latest nail polish formulas? Nothing that you’re going to miss. (Photo: about.com)
When nail polish was first created in France in the 1920’s, the formula was an adapted version of the glossy enamel used on cars. Eep! Thankfully, the formulas have come a long way since then. Over the past few years, we’ve seen many “3-free” formulas that omit harmful dibutyl phthalate (DBP), toluene, and formaldehyde. The next step: 5-free polishes, which are made without formaldehyde resin and camphor. Click through for more on these two toxic ingredients and for a list of our favorite 5-free brands!
