Justin Timberlake Won’t Be Making His Own Fragrance Anytime Soon: Notable Quotables

Notable Quotables is a weekly series featuring a great quote. Whether it’s the founder of a beloved beauty brand, an eccentric makeup artist making headlines, or even a super-stylish celebrity, our favorite tastemakers always have something worth sharing.

We might not have predicted it during his *NSYNC days, but Justin Timberlake has become one of the most versatile entertainers in the business. From regular SNL host to movie star to designer, he’s now adding the title of face of Givenchy’s Play Sport cologne to his ever-growing resume. In a recent interview with GQ UK, JT talked to the glossy about his latest collab:

"I know nothing about what it’s like to put a fragrance together. I sat with them first, and we talked more about my lifestyle, so the fragrance is an extension of that conversation more than anything."

Sadly, however, the rest of the interview revealed that we shouldn’t hold our breath for the musician to enter the fragrance game himself. (Which is too bad because “Sexy Back” really is the perfect name for a cologne.)

"I don’t think I would ever make my own—this is more comfortable for me. I don’t aspire to have my name on a fragrance.”

Should we start a letter writing campaign to change his mind?

We might be waiting a while for a Timberlake fragrance to launch but there are still excellent cologne options for any man in the Birchbox Shop.

Reading List: Educational Nail Art, Tom Ford Sells A Lot, Madonna Jumps on the Celebrity Fragrance Bandwagon & More

Happy November! The holiday season has barely started and already we’re well on the way to being overwhelmed. That’s why we’re taking the next couple days to relax and read up on some of the stories we missed this week. Here are a few to start with. Have a great weekend!

  • Mom really does know best. We love this cute slideshow of chic women and the beauty advice their moms gave them. No surprise — they’re all beautiful! [Refinery29]
  • Tom Ford’s new cosmetics collection is doing amazingly well. We can’t say we’re surprised but his event at Bergdorf Goodman on Wednesday sold $52K worth of products and was one of the biggest events in the retailers history. [WWD]
  • Madonna is launching a new fragrance called Truth or Dare. And it’s not just another celebrity fragrance; It’s the first in a series of lifestyle products. [TheGloss]
  • Do you need a good stretch? Find out a few secrets for getting the most out of your pre-workout routine. [Equinox Q Blog]
  • You know nail art is serious business but now it’s getting some real attention for its educational powers as well. A Rabbi outside of NYC is using nail art as a device to teach students about the Torah. [Fashionista]

Notable Quotables: The Kardashians

Notable Quotables is a weekly series featuring a great quote. Whether it’s the founder of a beloved beauty brand, an eccentric makeup artist making headlines, or even a super-stylish celebrity, our favorite tastemakers always have something worth sharing. This week our quote is about the Kardashian Sisters and their takeover of the beauty world. Whether you love them, hate them, or just don’t care, you can’t deny that the whole family has selling power!

“Kardashian is the type of brand that can afford to be everywhere — we’re not concerned about overexposure…What I believe makes the Kardashians so intriguing is they are in the public eye in a very exposed way — everyone who watches and reads about them feels like they know them, that they’re part of their family. There is an aspirational aspect that the consumer looks up to, as well as the day-to-day drama.” - Philip Zellner, chief executive officer of Lighthouse Beauty regarding Kardashian branded fragrances to WWD.

Who watched Kim’s Fantasy Wedding this weekend? In case you were wondering, I did, of course.

Celebrity Fragrance Wars: Heidi Klum + Beyonce

photos of Heidi Klum Shine and Beyonce Pulse by Courtesy Photo

We don’t usually think about Heidi Klum and Beyonce together, but the two actually have a lot in common. Both are strong female entrepreneurs with growing empires, both have cool husbands, and both are fashion icons. Not only that, they’re both talented musicians. Don’t tell me you forgot about Klum’s “hit“ Christmas song, “Wonderland”! Truly a classic.

Now the ladies are both releasing fragrances in September with Coty Beauty. Beyonce Pulse will be the singer’s third fragrance and is expected to be her most successful yet. WWD spoke with Beyonce’s perfumers who said, “The contrasted structure highlighted by sparkling citrus blend on top and warm, deep and sensual vanilla infusion in the back characterizes a citrus gourmand innovative classification. The final result is a high-energy charged fragrance with extreme sensuality.” Confusing…but we’re assuming that means we’ll feel like we’re Beyonce on stage if we wear it.

Klum’s first women’s fragrance, Shine, “has top notes of mandarin, pear and pink peppercorn; a heart of mimosa absolute, lily of the valley and sunflower, and a drydown of vanilla, Venezuelian tonka bean and musk cosmone.” Again, confusing. Maybe we’ll feel unequivocal but also supportive, just like Klum when she’s judging Project Runway. Never one to rest on her laurels, Klum already has another fragrance planned for next Spring 2012 and is planning some multimedia expansions as well, including the just launched channel.

We often have mixed feelings about celebrity fragrances. What do you think? Will you be picking up one, or both, of these? Let us know in the comments.

Jennifer Aniston’s New Scent Has Us Thinking: Celeb Fragrance, Yay or Nah?

Jennifer Aniston, $39,

Celebrity scents are immensely popular (though it remains to be seen whether or not Lady Gaga will have major success with her forthcoming fragrance inspired by blood and semen—so freaky!). And it’s not hard to understand why, right? If you identify with a star, and you like her style, chances are you’ll at least test out her perfume at a beauty counter somewhere. But when you dial it down, are celebrity fragrances a sort of creepy concept? Fashion copycatting someone is one thing, but wanting to smell like them? Perhaps I’m just over-thinking it. But personally, I steer clear of stars’ perfumes, mainly because I’ve never smelled one that I have really, truly loved (and I will admit that I did give SJP’s Lovely a chance). This might all change now that one of my favorite celebs EVER, Jennifer Aniston, finally launched her scent in the U.S. Exclusively available at Sephora starting today ($39), Aniston scent, in her own words, is “sexy, it’s clean, it reminds me of the beach.” Maybe the coolest part of the debut is the fundraising she is doing with the mega-beauty-retailer: For every ‘Like’ that Sephora gets on this page, a $1 will be donated to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital (the star has been a long-time spokesperson).

If you’re spritz-happy like we are, then you’ll love the fragrance section of our Birchbox Shop.
