Study Finds That Bald Men Are Totally Hot!

Based in Washington D.C., Ayren Jackson-Cannady is so savvy that we wished she lived closer to NYC so that we could swap products with her. This beauty writer knows what’s up (she’s written for Fitness, Glamour, and Gloss Daily) and we’re excited to have her sharing her know-how and multi-culti beauty expertise as a contributing editor.

Ayren and her guy, back in the day, before being bald was cool.

Pop Quiz: You’re single and you have three guys to pick from for a date. All of the fellas are physically equal (let’s just say that they’re all in Usain Bolt shape), and the only difference is their hair. Who do you choose?

A. The guy with a full head of thick, curly strands.
B. The looker with visibly thinning fringe.
C. The man with a completely shaved head.

A New Exhibit Inspires Serious Natural Hair Envy

Based in Washington D.C., Ayren Jackson-Cannady is so savvy that we wished she lived closer to NYC so that we could swap products with her. This beauty writer knows what’s up (she’s written for Fitness, Glamour, and Gloss Daily) and we’re excited to have her sharing her know-how and multi-culti beauty expertise as a contributing editor.

I’ve been oohing and aahhing over natural hairstyles for the last eight years ever since I grabbed a pair of scissors and chopped off my relaxed hair. What I was left with was an itty-bitty afro and a world of possibilities. I then chose to grow my hair out into dreadlocks—a decision that I’d do over 100 times. I went from a having a high maintenance mane that never grew to an easy-peasy ‘do that now reaches the middle of my back! (My healthy hair is also in part due to this combo: Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo + Carol’s Daughter Monio Repairing Hair Mask + Jane Carter Solution Revitalizing Leave-In Conditioner.)

Self Magazine’s 2012 Healthy Beauty Awards: Dr. Jart, Yes To & Many More

Health and beauty: a winning combo, no? At this morning’s Self Magazine 2012 Healthy Beauty Awards, the theme was products that make you look and feel amazing.

The event, held at the Museum of Modern Art, revealed 89 winners across the categories of face, makeup, nails, sun, hair, and body—from Top Acne Spot Solution (hello, Yes to Tomatoes Clear Skin Spot Stick) to Best Deep Conditioner (woot Ojon Super Sleek Smoothing Conditioner). The products were chosen by a panel of Self readers who tested them in their own homes and submitted their honest feedback. I recognize plenty of favorites on the list, but there are also ones I’m excited to try!

Beyond celebrating the phenomenal products, Self’s Editor-in-Chief, Lucy Danzinger, also set the tone of the event by bringing attention to social media. She told the audience of editors, industry execs, and brand bigwigs that companies shouldn’t try to strong-arm their message—they should just ensure that people are talking about their products and their brands. As a Twitter and Instagram addict, I loved hearing her give a digital call to action.

Check out the Birchbox products that made the Self list!

Products I Can’t Quit: Founder Edition Part Deux

Birchbox staffers have been known to play the beauty field. With so many fun samples floating around, can you blame us for having a hard time committing? Then again, when we find something we love, we stick to it. In this new feature, we’ll be asking Birchbox staffers to share the products they just can’t quit. Next up, co-founder, Hayley.

Hayley, Birchbox Co-founder

Beauty profile: Dry skin, slightly dry hair, classic/low-maintenance.

Products I can’t quit: Since we launched Birchbox, I’ve vowed to only use beauty products we sell in our store. In tech circles, it’s called “eating your own dog food.” If we can’t live off of only what we sell, how could we expect you to? I’ve tested tons of products from our shop but I keep coming back to the same ones over and over again. These are my current favorites.

The Best Smelling Hair Products Ever: Hairistocracy

We’re guilty of sticking with the same hair cut for years—if it’s not broke, why fix it?—but that can be a little boring. But not everyone has our issue. Paulina, one of our amazing operations associates, is always eyeing new cuts and styles. She’ll be sharing her tress inspiration and tips every other week here via her feature Hairistocracy.

Almost as important as how well a hair product works is how it smells. Of all the products I’ve ever tried, here are my five absolute favorites:

Feed Your Hair: Repair Damaged Locks

Thanks to one too many sessions with the blow dryer and flat iron, our hair needs something beyond our regular conditioner. Beauty Insiders Share Their Morning Secrets

It’s no surprise that our favorite brands happen to have rock star founders. This month, we asked the beauty insiders behind Anthony Logistics, Carol’s Daughter, and FAUX lashes to tell us a little bit about themselves — and their morning routines, to be more specific. What exactly are they up to before they get to the hard work of formulating products? Read on for all their answers.

Work It: Rainy Day Hair

It’s shaping up to be a pretty rainy week here in the Northeast, which means you better keep your umbrella-ella-ella on hand and prepare to fight the humidity. Here are a few things you can do to keep your hair looking fabulous.

Before You Style: Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! Use a deep conditioning treatment to beat the frizz before it starts. Carol’s Daughter Monoi Repairing Hair Mask repairs damage after just one use and seals moisture in.

My Wish List: Guest Blogger

The moment you start reading Alex Yeske’s dreams + jeans blog, you know one thing for sure: the girl has excellent taste. Musing on everything from fashion to beauty to design, the recent Syracuse grad has a knack for spotting pretty things — a skill that no doubt serves her well in her day job as a graphic designer for Madewell. This week, we’re lucky enough to have her guest blogging for us about everything from her beauty must-haves to how to get the perfect blow dry.

As I mentioned in Monday’s post, I absolutely adore testing out new products. I always have a running list of things I want to try and these are at the top of it:

1. Carol’s Daughter Monoi Hair Mask: I actually read about this product on the Birchbox blog a month or so ago and have been dying to try it ever since! I’m completely obsessed with testing out new hair products.

2. Nars Orgasm Illuminator: I love NARS’ Orgasm blush and think the shimmery version would be a great addition to my cosmetic bag.

3. Rodin Face Oil: This face oil comes up over and over again in magazines and on blogs. If that many people like it then it must be a great product!

4. Clarisonic Mia: I’m all about finding ways to make my skin noticeably better, and the technology behind this tool is genius.

5. Twistband Hair Ties: I’m never without a hair tie and these look so cute on your wrist, too!

Another must-try: Dr. Dennis Gross’ Extra Strength Alpha Beta Peel.
