Mascara is one of those products that’s a total game-changer. Great formulas can immediately make your eyes appear brighter, wider and more awake without leaving behind telltale smudges—and for that reason it’s one of the must-have products on every Birchbox staffer’s desk. But eyelashes come in all varieties—some are short and thick, some are long and thin—which is why we asked five team members with different lash types to tell us their top mascara picks.
"I’ve recently fallen in love with the It Cosmetics formula. It doesn’t smudge or flake and a few coats makes my lashes full and thick. Also, the lash ball at the tip of the wand makes getting my lower lashes so much easier." —Meredith Stebbins, Editor and Senior Manager, Traffic & Trends
Our editor Candice is one of the first people we turn to for insight into the newest and best products we just have to get our hands on. A tech nerd at heart who also happens to look stunning in red lipstick, she’s equally game for discussions about comic books and the art of blending a gradient eye shadow look. In our latest video, Candice shares her picks for a fabulous fall—watch the video for her seasonal-must-haves, then check out highlights from her beauty profile and list of favorites below:

A few weeks ago, we asked our Facebook followers to vote on their favorite medium-length hairstyle and this triple braided overwhelmingly received the most love. Whether you need an easy wedding updo or a pretty way to keep your hair up, this boho-chic hairstyle should do the trick. All it takes is three simple braids, some bobby pins, elastics, and of course, hairspray. And while it’s lovely on its own, don’t be afraid to twist it to your taste—you can add pretty hair clips or other embellishments to make it your own.
Check out Candice’s video for the full tutorial on this gorgeous look.
What are your go-to hairstyles for medium-length hair?
I’ve mentioned on the blog before that I have frustratingly sensitive, breakout-prone skin. But what I haven’t talked about is another one of my most bashful beauty secrets: I inherited fantastically bushy eyebrows from my dad.
You might say, “But Candice, I haven’t seen those crazy brows in a Birchbox video before!” (At least hopefully! Maybe you have seen them? Eek.) But I’ve been able to shape and manage those tiny caterpillars—sans wax-induced breakouts—thanks to the Indian art of threading.
When I was a little girl, I had a tradition on Sunday nights with my dad. After family dinner, we’d drive to my local Walgreen’s and hang out in the aisles. While he’d flip through the latest magazines, I would pore over the pens and pencils—scouting out any new additions that could potentially join my school bag lineup.
It sounds a little strange to hang out in the pen aisle, I know, but I swear that while I was growing up in the ’90s, there was some very serious pen innovation happening. Every week something new could pop up that would blow your mind. I got to take part in the era of Lisa Frank, multi-color and glitter-friendly gelly rolls, and who could forget the squiggle pen? Which is all a very nostalgic way of saying that I have had a fairly long love affair with pens—and that I am very picky when it comes to what I actually like.
Last week my aunt shot me a semi-despairing email that plaintively asked, “Candice, what’s a concealer that really covers dark circles?” She had unsuccessfully tried several formulas that wouldn’t even last through a normal workday, and was in need of some serious help. Her note reminded me that in the wide world of concealers, it’s important to know which formulas are best suited to your particular concerns so you choose the best product.
Since I’ve suffered from every face malady requiring a concealer—acne, scars, blemishes, undereye circles, the list goes on—and my combination skin poses its own set of challenges, I decided to come up with a mini-guide on how to find the perfect concealer for you.
