Why I’m Loving Older Women as the Stars of Major Beauty Campaigns

When she turned 41, model Lauren Hutton was fired from Revlon after ten years as the face of the brand. That was back in 1984. Three decades later, it appears that more mature ladies have made some major strides when it comes to landing (and keeping) contracts for coveted ad campaigns. The latest NARS Spring 2013 ad campaign features 42-year-old British model Stella Tennant. After watching the brand’s behind-the-scenes video, I came to the conclusion that the brunette’s amazing looks inadvertently prove that Aaliyah was right when she told us that age ain’t nothing but a number.

But what’s really interesting is that Tennant isn’t the only beauty campaign star over the age of 25. Lately, I’ve noticed that more and more middle-aged women are becoming the spokeswomen for big beauty brands—and it’s a trend I’m fully on board with.

CoverGirl Goes Pink For Fall: Notable Quotables

Notable Quotables is a weekly series featuring a great quote. Whether it’s the founder of a beloved beauty brand, an eccentric makeup artist making headlines, or even a super-stylish celebrity, our favorite tastemakers always have something worth sharing.

Of all the beauty ad campaigns celebrities can book, CoverGirl is one of the pinnacles. CoverGirls are an exclusive group of models and actresses, and being chosen to represent the brand is a real sign that you’ve “made it.” Now, singer Pink joins the ranks of spokeswomen that include Taylor Swift, Sofia Vergara, Ellen DeGeneres, and Dania Ramirez. Pink spoke with WWD about the ad campaign, which will launch in November:

"Joining a group of women who have always inspired me — to laugh out loud, let my guard down or play around with my beauty look — is such an honor.”

Easy, Breezy, Beautiful: Taylor Swift

Photo: Covergirl

Taylor Swift’s new CoverGirl ad for Natureluxe was released last week and we can’t get enough of her bright red lip in the commercial. Bold lips are a huge trend but it’s still pretty intimidating to wear a red lipstick (particularly for blonds with fair skin) so we’re excited to see her rock it in style.

Taylor’s wearing the new CoverGirl Lip Perfection lipstick, which promises to make your lips healthier and happier if you wear it regularly (supposedly within seven days). We haven’t gotten our hands on any yet to confirm their claim, but here are a few tips to get your lips ready.

1. Exfoliate! Use a gentle exfoliator to get rid of any dry, flaky skin on your lips. C.O. Bigelow’s Mentha Lip Buffer isn’t too messy and the sugar crystals taste delish.

2. Moisturize. Prep your pout with a conditioning balm or lip primer. I like Napoleon Perdis’ Auto Pilot Lip Service because it glides on like a gloss but feels moisturizing, not sticky.

3. Check out our guide to red lips with expert tips from the Lipstick Queen herself, Poppy King for advice on picking the right red.
