Carey Mulligan Is A Total Babe in Balenciaga At Cannes
Despite the fact that The Great Gatsby has already had its world premiere, the larger-than-life drama by director Baz Lurhmann managed to nab the opening slot for the Cannes Film Festival, which kicked off earlier today.
Getting the festival off to a good start, Carey Mulligan appeared in a show-stopping Balenciaga strapless jumpsuit—proving that you don’t need a lavish gown to be make a jaw-dropping statement. We’re huge fans of her unconventional choice. And another round of applause should be given to Ms. Mulligan for perfectly pairing her beauty look to her ensemble: fresh barely-there makeup and a modern yet not-too-voluminous bouffant.

Paris Fashion Week Beauty, So Far: Au Naturale

We fell hard for Natalie Alcala last fall, when the LA-based writer and blogger spent a week guest blogging for us. In fact, we loved her posts so much that we asked her to be a contributing editor. In addition to blogging for us once a week, she’ll also be writing for the Birchbox Magazine and keeping us up to speed on all things fashion, beauty, and fun.

This week, the streets of Paris are flooded with dressed-to-the-nines fashion fiends, all enthusiastically posing for photogs while dashing from show to show. Runways are equally exciting, featuring an array of riveting ready-to-wear shows by a host of esteemed houses. In contrast, beauty has been muted to balance out the over-the-top styles on display, with focus on the eyes, brows and lips. Here, I’ve corralled four of my favorite faces to copy this season.

4 (Super Wearable) Lip and Eye Pairings from Paris Fashion Week

We fell hard for Natalie Alcala last fall, when the LA-based writer and blogger spent a week guest blogging for us. In fact, we loved her posts so much that we asked her to be a contributing editor. In addition to blogging for us once a week, she’ll also be writing for the Birchbox Magazine and keeping us up to speed on all things fashion, beauty, and fun.

Following my roundup of London Fashion Week beauty, here are four beauty looks that caught my eye in the City of Lights. Although the garments were as decadent as ever, it was refreshing to see a more natural, wearable beauty look on the runways this season.

Lanvin: Alber Elbaz’s spring 2013 collection was surprisingly minimalist this season. To complement a black-white-nude palette punctuated by the occasional jewel tone, the French fashion house’s creative director opted for a smudged smoky eye and nude pink lips. I love that the lower eyelid gets all the drama and the upper is mostly bare. For this look, I’d reach for a nice smudge-ready liner like this one by Noir.

Balmain: Blink and you’ll miss the super subtle sparkle at the Balmain show. Just a teeny-tiny bit of glitter on the lids adds a light punch to an otherwise bare face. To nab a similar dewy glow, I’d lightly swipe on a bit of Benefit’s Creaseless Cream Eyeshadow Liner in R.S.V.P., a sparkling champagne hue.

Reading List: New Product Launches, Celebrity Ponytails, and Hunger Games Fever

Photo: Capitol Couture

This week has been full of so many product launches, from Benefit’s first foundation and NARS’ tinted moisturizer to Garnier’s BB Cream and Katy Perry’s False Lashes. We’ve hardly had a chance to read about anything else but here are a few of the links worth clicking through this weekend.

  • A campaign to get Mattel to mass-produce a bald Barbie is gaining traction. The Barbies would be for children suffering from hair loss or whose mothers, sisters, grandparents, etc have lost hair during chemotherapy. [Styleite]
  • Hunger Games excitement is at a fever pitch. The latest development is a new “Capitol Couture” website, plus new information about the reported 500 hair color styles designed by Joico. [Fashionista]
  • Turns out we’re not the only ones into nail stickers—Diane Keaton is also a fan. The Annie Hall star tweeted a picture of her awesome new plaid nail stickers on Monday. [WhoSay]
  •  Here’s someone we don’t often associate with beauty: Mario Batali! The celebrity chef is lopping off his ponytail of 15 years for charity. Now can we convince him to get rid of the Crocs? [Fashion Etc]
  • After news broke today that Kristen Stewart will be the face of the new Balenciaga fragrance, we couldn’t help but wonder what the fragrance will be, and what the campaign will look like. The Gloss has an idea plus a roundup of pictures of Stewart looking surprisingly cheery. [The Gloss]
