The Quintessential Spring Fashion and Beauty Look
Spring and summer are my happiest times of year because I can wear my favorite clothes. (Note: I am an u-g-l-y cold weather dresser—I spend the entirety of the winter bundled in a rather unflattering Patagonia puffer.) With warm days just around the corner—fingers crossed—I am ready to shed my un-chic layers and embrace my most beloved trend of the season: chambray.
I’ve spent a lot of time in the Madewell store recently (everyone on Birchbox’s mailing list got a $25 off $75+ and I took full advantage) and as a result, I’m really inspired to layer denim on denim—on denim! If you and I happen to have my same taste, then you’re in luck: I’ve shopped out my fave Madewell look from head to toe.
- Jean Vest: There’s something really badass about a shrunken denim vest. It adds edge to even the girliest of outfits and is just as great over long sleeves as it is over tank tops.
- Perfect Chambray Ex-boyfriend Shirt: The loose fit and light wash make this a versatile essential.
- Skinny Skinny Ankle Jean in Black Frost Wash: If you don’t have a great pair of slim-fit black denim in your closet, run (don’t walk) and pick up a pair stat. These go with everything.

Los Angeles native and USC student Sophie Elkus is a self-described fashion addict. Her blog Angel Food Style is where her joy for putting together the perfect outfit comes to life. And you would think that her fabulous dress sense must come second to her studies, but Sophie proves that having a full schedule doesn’t mean sacrificing style. This week, she’s sharing her favorite beauty and fashion tips for women on-the-go with us on our blog.
Classes at 8AM are rough. Period. You must be an early riser to make it to one on time, and even once you’re there, it can be a real struggle. When the alarm goes off, the last thing you need to think about is your outfit and makeup. That’s why I’ve chosen my favorite time-saving essentials to speed up your morning. You may even have a spare minute for Starbucks!
1. Dry Shampoo
Dry shampoo will save you an hour—literally. Why bother washing and drying your hair when you can lightly spray, fluff, and leave?
It only takes a couple minutes, but mascara makes a huge difference in convincing the world that you’re actually awake. (Disclaimer: It’s worth it to apply slowly. Nothing good comes from sleep deprivation mixed with pointy objects near your eye.)
We’re always talking about the staffers in the Birchbox office, but the ones who you interact with everyday are the ladies of our hard-working Ops team. These fabulous femmes handle all of your customer service woes. We wanted to give you a chance to get to know them even better—so here’s a peek at who’s on the other side of the phone.
Every month we try our absolute hardest to fill your Birchboxes with samples we think you will love. (Did you know that we use a special algorithm to maximize your happiness?) But we also understand that sometimes a sample can feel like a match that’s not quite made in heaven. On the off chance that this occurs, we wanted to help you figure out how to turn that so-so sample into a so-awesome sample.
We know you don’t have oodles of time to browse through everything on the Birchbox blog and in the magazine each week. Here’s a short list of the top blog posts, articles, videos, and news you need to read this weekend.
- The 4 Greatest Beauty Matchups of All Time: There’s no better March matchup than a classic rivalry: Kansas vs. Kansas State, Georgetown vs. Syracuse, Duke vs. North Carolina—the list goes on. In the spirit of college ball’s most memorable face-offs, we bring you four of the greatest beauty showdowns ever.
- The 36-Hour Spa Weekend: Need to recharge? Try Brooklyn. Birchbox Man shows you how to spend a day and a half shopping, eating, and grooming like a true monarch in the county of kings.
- How to Find the Right Concealer for You: We’ve all suffered from the various face problems that require a bit of cover-up — acne, scars, blemishes, undereye circles, etc — so here’s a mini-guide to find the perfect concealer for you.
- Our Latest BB Cream Obsession: Marcelle: If there’s been one game-changing product from the last year, it’s BB Cream (and CC Cream), and we’re head over heels for this one from Marcelle that comes in three very different shades for all skin tones.
This weekend is the perfect time to catch up on our March magazine issue. Browse all our articles and videos here.
Something to know about me: if we go out to eat together, I’ll assume we are sharing everything and that your dinner is communal. And in the same way that I’m notorious for swiping forkfuls of baked rigatoni or apple crisp, I’m also known for pattering over to Birchbox editors’ desks and idly playing with whatever new products might be laying around. Luckily, my team knows how to share.
Recently, I picked Shiseido’s new Urban Environment Tinted UV Protector off of Candice’s desk. (I asked first!) I was intrigued because the formula seemed too good to be true: oil-free, sheer coverage, antiaging ingredients that undo existing damage, and water-resistant SPF 43. Not to mention the fact that I love all manner of tinted moisturizers and BB Creams. Motto: the fewer makeup steps in the morning, the better!
We loved New York Fashion Week’s attention-grabbing beauty trends like burgundy lips and messy halo braids. But in the midst of all the big, bold looks for this fall, there was one beauty product that was conspicuously absent on many of the runways: mascara. DKNY, Lacoste, 3.1 Phillip Lim, and several other shows featured models with clean lashes that drew attention away from the eyes and instead focused it on features like flawless skin or pouty lips. We admittedly feel a bit naked without a quick swipe of mascara before heading out the door, but this new modern look has us considering leaving the makeup bag staple behind and trying something different.
As skincare buffs, we wish we could spend our days wandering the world in search of the latest miracle serum, but most of the time we have to wait for the best products to find us. That’s why we’re fans of Peach and Lily, a blog and new online boutique that brings hard-to-find, best-selling beauty products from Korea and Japan to the US. This week, Alicia Yoon and Cindy Kim, the site’s co-founders, will be sharing their globetrotting experiences and dispensing their hard-earned wisdom.
We recently went on a serious mineral skincare hunt. Why, you ask? Because mineral-based products don’t include parabens, alcohol, dyes, perfumes, preservatives, mineral oils, lead or (best of all) talc! This is great news for acne-prone or sensitive skin since everything is mild, non-comedogenic, and won’t irritate the skin. (Think Bare Minerals). Essentially you’ll get great, gentle coverage. So given that Korea is the "skincare superpower" according to Marie Claire, we wanted to see what mineral-based skincare goodies we could find over here.
We’d like to introduce Sua Young—a brand carried in leading spas throughout the world which is making quite the splash in Korea.

We pride ourselves on sourcing the coolest global beauty brands at Birchbox, even if it means we have to fly across the world to find them. Since many of the most groundbreaking beauty innovations come from Asia (hello, BB cream!), we’re always on the lookout for cool brands from the Eastern hemisphere. Earlier this week, Leah and Miko, two lovely ladies from our Beauty Partnerships team, left for Hong Kong to attend the annual Cosmoprof trade show. This international convention (which also hosts events in Las Vegas and Bologna) features companies from the Asia Pacific region showcasing their latest wares to industry insiders.
Till Friday, Leah and Miko will be at Cosmoprof scoping out new brands to feature in future Birchboxes, and here are just a few that they’re excited to see:
