Q: What are your favorite quick fixes for breakouts?

A: Use a salicylic acid treatment gel at night, for sure. Salicylic acid is antibacterial at 2%, so it kills the bacteria associated with acne. It also exfoliates by dissolving dead skin cells and sebum on the skin surface and within the follicle (a.k.a. your pore), so it helps to clear out congestion and prevent comedones that lead to breakouts.

Myth 1:  Eating foods like French fries and chocolate causes acne.

Fact: There’s no scientific link between food and acne. Skin, like any other organ, is affected by what you eat. If you eat vegetables and fruit and drink plenty of water, your skin will certainly look better than if you ate nothing but junk food. However, high levels of sugar in the diet can elevate hormone levels, which in turn can lead to breakouts. (There are some beliefs that artificial hormones used in the production of cow’s milk may affect acne development.) What you eat determines your overall health as well as the health of your skin, however it is not a cause of acne.

  1. We can eliminate the food source for the bacteria that causes breakouts by inhibiting overactive sebaceous glands, which can also help reduce oily shine. These ingredients are known sebum-regulating agents: nordihydroguaiaretic acid, niacinamide, yeast extract, horse chestnut extract, sarcosine and zinc gluconate.
