Today is National Bubble Bath Day—Go Hop in the Tub!

It appears that women used to wear makeup and hair ribbons when they took baths. Looks like we need a quick refresher on tying bows. (Photo: Rebelle Society

Like every other New Yorker I know, I can’t remember the last time I’ve taken a bath.  The prospects of scrubbing my moldy prewar tub, then proceeding to ignore the knocks of my roommate as I hog the bathroom, seem a bit daunting. Lately, though, I’ve been dying to inaugurate a weekly series of long, relaxing soaks—even if I spark an apartment feud. As luck would have it, today is National Bubble Bath Day (no really! it is), and the abundance of awesome bath products out there have inspired me to take the plunge. Here are my current faves for a little Me time in the tub:

Fall Beauty Dare: Show Off Your Feet!

Based in Washington D.C., Ayren Jackson-Cannady is so savvy that we wished she lived closer to NYC so that we could swap products with her. This beauty writer knows what’s up (she’s written for FitnessGlamour, and Gloss Daily) and we’re excited to have her sharing her know-how and multi-culti beauty expertise as a contributing editor.

I Love fall (Love it with a capital L). The drapey sweaters, the candy corn, the crisp, fresh air! But, if there’s one thing that really irks me about the season it’s that fall is precisely when our poor toes start to play second fiddle to, well, everything. No more neon pink polish. No more strappy sandals to show off a fresh pedicures. No more caring. And, why should we? We just wind up stuffing our feet into super cute boots to hide any visible flaking or callousing. Then, when we see them again, the sight of our jagged toenails and dry cuticles just depresses us so we quickly slip them into our reindeer slippers.

But here’s my fall challenge to you (and myself): Make it all about your toes. Rock the bright polish, give yourself pedicures, and play with nail art. Here are some ideas from CND nail expert Candice Manacchio to making foot care fun in the fall.

Winter Skin Savers: Guest Blogger

Don’t let the name fool you. Jessica Chu’s Tumblr Of Vice and Men doesn’t have anything to do with hot male model eye candy — but it does cover in great detail the best kind of vice: lusting after pretty things. This week she’s sharing her expert eye with us and dishing on everything from the best winter skin savers to the YouTube beauty gurus you should be following.

As much as I hate to say it, now is the time to start thinking about winter skin prep. (I mean, I live in New York City and it has already snowed here.) I get super dry in the wintertime and since I insist on walking everyday to work in the cold, I need to stock up on some of my seasonal favorites.

Bathtime Challenge: Best Feet Forward

We don’t have much time for lounging in the tub, and we’re betting that you don’t either. But there’s something to be said for stopping to smell the bath salts. Which is why we sampled AHAVA’s bath salts in some of this month’s Birchbox deliveries — just a gentle reminder to take the time to relax! To get you excited, we’re bringing back the Bathtime Challenge, this spring’s five-part series all about soaking and scrubbing. Today: Feet Patrol.

If you’re like me, getting a pedicure is definitely a once-in-a-while occasion. And even though my bathroom cabinets are chock-full of top pumices, creams, and other nail doodad, I have never been able to get soft, non-cracked heels. So I decided for my last installment of The Bathtime Challenge, I’d put my handy-dandy AHAVA salts to the test and see if they could help me recreate a spa pedi at home.

Bathtime Challenge: Simple Soak

We don’t have much time for lounging in the tub, and we’re betting that you don’t either. But there’s something to be said for stopping to smell the bath salts. Which is why we sampled AHAVA’s bath salts in some of this month’s Birchbox deliveries — just a gentle reminder to take the time to relax! To get you excited, we’re bringing back the Bathtime Challenge, this spring’s five-part series all about soaking and scrubbing.

So far, The Bathtime Challenge has helped us seen bath salts in a couple new ways: First as a body scrub and then as a facial bath. Last night, I decided to go back and use them in the standard fashion. After a very long day, I decided to see if AHAVA’s Eucalyptus salt could calm my achy muscles. The salts help release muscle tension and the smell of eucalyptus is known for it’s calming effect.

Drawing a very hot bath, I sprinkled in a cap full of salt. The smell was very strong (in a good soothing way) filling the bathroom with a heavy steam-shower type aroma. Once in the bath, I decided to really let the salts go to work by soaking for ten minutes with a warm cloth draped over my eyes. The salts and fragrance really helped me relax right before getting into bed. If you’re looking for a quick and easy way to unwind this is definitely the way to go. They’re an easy way to bring the spa to you.

Bathtime Challenge: Face Time

We don’t have much time for lounging in the tub, and we’re betting that you don’t either. But there’s something to be said for stopping to smell the bath salts. To get you excited, we’re bringing back the Bathtime Challenge, this spring’s five-part series all about soaking and scrubbing. Today, we’re testing out the at-home facial.

Last night, The Bathtime Challenge actually took me out of the bath. We always hear about how great bath salts are for the skin, but that usually means our arms and legs. What about using bath salts as a skincare remedy for your face? Odd or beneficial?

Bathtime Challenge: Scrub Savvy

We don’t have much time for lounging in the tub, and we’re betting that you don’t either. But there’s something to be said for stopping to smell the bath salts. Which is why we sampled AHAVA’s bath salts in some of this month’s Birchbox deliveries — just a gentle reminder to take the time to relax! To get you excited, we’re bringing back the Bathtime Challenge, this spring’s five-part series all about soaking and scrubbing. Day two: Scrub savvy.

Bath salts are more versatile than you’d think. Last night, as part of the Bathtime Challenge, I decided to turn AHAVA’s mineral salts into a scrub and see how they act as an exfoliator. Using olive oil as the base (you don’t need very much), I sprinkled in some salt and layered the mixture on my arms and legs. With a little gentle scrubbing, the salts eventually dissolved into a slick layer of scented oil. Using a wash cloth, I then wiped everything off and did a quick rinse.

AHAVA Revival Bath Salt in Juniper, $22, birchbox.com

Sure, most people take showers. But for me, soaking in the tub is the norm and a part of my everyday routine. My habit of taking baths is a true case of monkey see, monkey do: It was my mother’s method for getting clean, as well as my older sister’s, so it was inevitable that I would follow suit.
