Last night, Kiehl’s debuted a new venture that was two years in the making: their very first spa, on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Officially open to the public for business today, Spa 1851 takes the brand’s apothecary cool vibe to the next level. Perched on the second floor of their new boutique store, the spa has three treatment rooms —Apothecary, Rainforest, and Adventure — plus a men’s service area with two barber chairs. The new space is filled with colorful antique curiosities, as well as some serious art. Our favorite treatment room, Rainforest, is covered in a photograph of a Maui rainforest by David LaChapelle.
Beyond the renovations, Kiehl’s has redefined what ‘spa’ means for the brand. Instead of generic treatments, Spa 1851 hand-mixes and customizes all its facials for each individual. Their aestheticians use high concentrations of natural ingredients, including lavender, arnica flower, eucalyptus leaf and ginger root, which give the therapies high-impact results. Don’t expect any traditional soothing music either—but you are encouraged to plug in your own iPod, if you like!
