As a celebrity stylist, Anita Patrickson's whole job is to make famous people look even more fabulous (you can follow her star-studded adventures on both Facebook and Twitter). Since she’s a total dressing pro, we asked Patrickson for her absolute best fall fashion advice. Here’s what the style maven had to say:
1. Don’t take on a trend just because it’s in style.
Remember the neon trend? Well I took it very seriously and I’m now living with the regret. (I’ve even been considering untagging myself from certain photos on Facebook.) When it comes to picking new styles to wear each season, the first thing to consider is what will suit your body type. Follow that number one rule and then you can shop with abandon (bearing in mind that we live in a Internet-savvy world with nowhere to hide).
2. When turkey time comes around, strong fabrics with incredible cuts are going to be your best friend.
Some of the reasons why fall fashion is the best: tweed jackets, architectural blazers, high-waisted pants, and fabulous structured coats with equestrian tails. All of these styles are figure-flattering and chic. If you are not feeling your skinniest, garments with a built-in structure instantly give you an amazing shape. Pass the gravy, please!
3. Choosing the perfect fall boots:
- Casual ankle booties with a stacked heel
- Motorcycle boots
- Flat knee-high riding boots
- Ridiculously fashiony heeled booties
- Stiletto heeled thigh-high boots
This will pretty much get you anywhere you need to go. However, with space or budget restrictions, this list isn’t all that practical. I live in my stacked ankle booties and do just fine without the rest. If you are looking for one pair of boots to invest in this fall, then one of my favorite options is a pair of thigh-highs. They are huge this season. If you’re like me and you have been desperate to wear these, but have been too afraid people might think you were doing the walk of shame, this is your moment! Just make sure the rest of your look is covered up and conservative or you may get picked up (in the wrong way).
4. If a trend like Punk is too much for you to handle, pick an accessory or a makeup look that embodies the theme instead.
For example, a punky studded clutch or a fabulous ear cuff can be just as powerful as a tartan kilt and motorcycle boots! Bold brows and highlighted cheek bones are one of my favorite makeup trends this fall and they are a fabulous way to stay ahead of the curve without blowing the bank.
