I’ll never forget my first hair coloring experience. I was in 8th grade and I somehow convinced my traditional south asian mother (who has a particular attachment to long black hair) to let me get highlights as a birthday gift. Let’s just say that the result of my highlights back then taught me one thing—moms are always right.
Since then, my desire to experiment with hair-coloring faded till it became relatively non-existent. I realized that my natural hair color suited my skin tone best, and that if I ever had an itch to change my hair, I should stick to haircuts and not new hair colors!
That all changed when I moved to New York about a year-and-a-half ago and started working at Birchbox. I live in a city with some of the best colorists in the world and am surrounded by inspiring trends everyday. How could I not take advantage of that? The real revelation happened when fellow Birchbox staffer Caitlin came into work with her hair lightened through a technique called balayage. I fell in love with the look since it wasn’t quite as dramatic as an ombre, and it felt more fresh and natural than highlights—perfect for summer!
It was time for me to get over my scarring experience from over a decade ago and do something bold. I also wanted to prove to myself (and perhaps other south asian women in the process) that you can have fun with your hair color and go outside of your comfort zone. It’s really about being confident in the look and owning it! (I think it turned out pretty great.)

What’s just as exciting as a new hair look? Experimenting with new hair products! I’m a Kerastase loyalist and have heard nothing but amazing things about their products for color-treated hair—particularly their Chroma Captive line. We sampled the collection to our subscribers this summer, and all I saw on Facebook or Twitter (in feedback on our site) was how much everyone loved these products. I figured if the Birchbox community loves it so much, I would too.
Flash forward a month later and I couldn’t be happier with the decision to switch over to this line. Kerastase’s 3 Step System includes a cleansing shampoo, treatment mask, and protective styling product. Using the line from start to finish has helped protect my color from fading, and keeps my hair moisturized even after all of the processing to get the look.
I have to say a big thank you to the Birchbox community for helping me discover my new go to hair products. I couldn’t have done it without you all! You’ve helped convince me to try more hair dying experiments in the future.
