Beach Bunny Reinvents the Ponytail at Miami Swim Week

We’ve got contributing editor Natalie Alcala on speed-dial. Not only does the LA-based writer and blogger know the best places to score an unforgettable braid, she’s also discovered the secret to perfect skin from Hollywood’s elite. Every week, she’ll be cluing us in to the latest in West Coast fashion, beauty, and fun.

While there were tons of stellar shows at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim this year, (Wildfox was definitely a crowd-pleaser), nothing holds a candle to the beauty spotted at Beach Bunny.

TRESemmé and super-stylist Tyler Laswell helped the Cali swimwear label bring even more heat to the sizzling city by debuting the fauxhawk French braid of my dreams.

As modeled by the lovely Hana Nitsche (hellooo, cheekbones!), Laswell’s “Beach Bad Girl” look—his words—definitely took some time to craft. “Beach Bunny’s designers sent me a photo of a high ponytail and said, ‘we really like this but we’re open to ideas.’ So, every day after photo shoots I would come home and sit in my studio and just think. I’d play with wigs to see how far I could push the concept of a ponytail and in what direction it would go. Finally, it came out of nowhere. As soon as I saw it on the wig I was like ‘Ah! That’s it!’ You truly know it when you see it. I probably did about 25 different versions of it before I knew that this was the one.”

To get the mega-tight ponytail just right, Taswell used TRESemmé’s Keratin Smooth Heat Protection Shine Spray. “I like to really wet the hair down because it’s always easier to produce a perfect pony when it’s wet,” he adds. His next go-to product is TRESemmé’s 24 Hour Body Finishing Spray. He sprayed a ton of it at the roots before brushing hair back. The pony is then fishtail-braided to perfection.

"Everyone loves a good braid on the beach," the stylist explains. "But this one has some edge. It has a hard feeling to it without being too hard. It’s kind of having a Sarah-Jessica-Parker-at-the-Met-Ball moment, don’t ya think?” I couldn’t have said it better myself.
