We don’t often come across a beauty brand that’s as diehard about using exclusively natural ingredients as Indie Lee. But when we heard the story of the founder, Indie Lee herself, it suddenly made sense. Back in 2009, Lee suffered a brain tumor that her doctors suggested could have been caused by environmental toxins. After her recovery, the former accountant completely changed gears and set out to create her own line of 100 percent natural and eco-friendly beauty products. Here, she sounds off on her beauty philosophy.
Why do you think that natural beauty products are so crucial?
Part of my mission is to help people understand that what they put on their bodies is just as important as what they put in them. Natural beauty products not only help you protect the environment—they help you take better care of your body and your health.
What are your favorite superstar ingredients?
I hate to play favorites, but my two picks have to be calendula oil and squalane oil. People are afraid of oils—they think they will be greasy—but if you use the right ones, they absorb right into your skin and hydrate beautifully.
If you could encourage people to switch out one product for an all-natural version, what would it be?
Facial and body moisturizers. Those are the first things you put on when your pores are open and most receptive to product. You want them to be free of chemicals that can hurt you.
Which ingredients are the biggest no-nos in your book?
Formaldehyde (a preservative and a known carcinogen), phthalates (found in synthetic ingredients and tied to hormone disruptors), and talc (a hotly debated ingredient right now and the topic of lots of legislation). My motto is, when in doubt, throw it out.
Which products do you never leave home without?
On a daily basis, you’ll always find my Blemish Stick, lipstick, and eyeliner stashed in my purse. For an overnight trip, I never leave home without my Squalane Facial Oil, the Swiss Apple Facial Serum, the Carrot French Clay Soap, and my Brightening Cleanser. Oh, and a fabulous pair of high heels, of course.
