There are a couple great upsides of my oily complexion: 1. no dry flaky skin most of the year and 2. an occasionally dewy appearance in photos. But one of the major downsides is that in extra hot and humid weather, no matter how much mattifier I wear or how many oil-absorbing sheets I have on hand, inevitably within an hour of being outside, I will be a gleaming glistening mess. And that means I can expect my fair share of breakouts coming very soon.
The one surefire way I’ve discovered to avoid seriously bad flare ups this time of year: using salicylic acid products. The latest formula that I’ve added to my regime is DDF’s acne control treatment and it’s one of the most effective that I’ve tried.
The night time formula is perfect for my busy schedule since it can work its magic while I’m getting rest. Plus, its triple team of ingredients makes sure that even if I’m treating a blemish, it won’t irritate my skin. Salicylic acid helps unclog pores by clearing out dirt and built up sebum (which later become blackheads!), and DDF’s Clarifying Neutralizing Complex helps soothes inflammation and guards against future damage. The final part of this skincare hat trick? Glycerin adds a dose of moisture to ensure that my skin doesn’t get that tough dry and flaky look that I had, unfortunately, during my teenage years. Excitingly, some of you will be receiving this in your July Birchbox!
If you’ve never used a salicylic acid treatment before, here are a few quick applications tips:
1. Start by applying every other day just to make sure that your skin isn’t particularly sensitive to the formula.
2. If you aren’t breaking out everywhere, try putting the treatment on only breakout affected areas first.
3. A little goes a long way—you won’t need too much more than a pea-sized to dime-sized amount for your whole face. This is a rather liquidy formula, unlike other gel or cream-based options, so start with a smaller amount and gradually build up.
4. It’s non-scented, so for anyone with particularly sensitive noses or allergy-prone skin, you’ll be in good hands.
