For most of my life, shine has been my nemesis. Urged by magazines—and concerned dermatologists—to nix the grease that regularly coats my T-zone, I’ve viewed it as the aggressor. Much of my beauty regimen has consisted of waging an endless war against the ever-encroaching sheen. Which is why I had my doubts about the concept of a Face Gloss.
But I got the chance to test out a newly-released version from cult beauty brand MAKE earlier this week at Michael Angelo’s Wonderland Beauty Salon, a whimsical hub of dabbing, spritzing, and styling in Manhattan’s West Village. It’s also the only brick-and-mortar shop where you can get your hands on the lion’s share of MAKE’s products.
MAKE’s latest collection, named “Aether,” seems to be all about playing with shimmer and luminosity. There’s ultra-sparkly eye shadow, a skin illuminator, and a cool compact so you don’t have to choose between a matte or dewy look. But what caught my eye was the Face Gloss.
Here’s what it looks like straight out of the tube:
Turns out, face gloss doesn’t go on your T-zone. It’s designed to be dabbed on your cheekbones as a facial highlighter. Being acne-prone, I decided to shy away from the cheek area. But there are still plenty of other places where a drop of dew looks lovely: your eyelids, bare shoulders, or décolletage. Sure enough, this approach really worked for me. Instead of making me look greasy, it gave a supple and dewy look in all the right places that’s perfect for summer.
I also loved how easy it was to apply the gloss. Squirt it into your palm and dab wherever you need a boost.
MAKE’s makeup artist at Wonderland let me test-drive some “Aether” colors on my eyelids, and she topped off the whole look with the Face Gloss. And guess what? I totally dug it.
After trying—and taking home—the gloss, removing shine is no longer my goal. Looking good this summer will be more about rearranging my signature sheen—or as any realtor would say: “location, location, location.”
