Pack Light With Packets: You’ve Got Male

Once a week, Birchbox’s resident yoga and men’s product expert, Eric, will gives us girls some insight into his world in You’ve Got Male. Whether he’s giving his expertise on skincare (boys need advice, too!) or highlighting his new favorite grooming trend, this guy has got taste—so we’re lucky he’s on staff and willing to share.

I think I can speak for most everyone at Birchbox when I say that none of us love packet samples. When trying a new product, it’s always best to get a more lasting experience and foil packets tend to be single use. (Plus, we are greedy and want as much of a new product as we can get our grubby little hands on.)

However, when packing for this week’s trip to New Orleans, I was reminded of a time when packet samples come in handy: travel! Foil packets are great when you’re on the go for a number of reasons. For starters, they are always readily available at beauty retailers—you can even walk up to a counter and request your favorite product by name. Also, they are tiny enough so you can carry them all on the plane with you, no problem. They are perfect for weekend trips too—by the time you open them up and used them for two or three days, you’re done with them and can throw them out. No fuss, no muss.

A few tips for acquiring and using packets: Once you’ve identified your fave products that you’ll want to travel with, visit counters at large department stores. They will have the most samples on hand. If your go-to serums and eye creams are not available, ask the salesperson for a comparable formula. You’ll be fine for a few days—and you might even find something new that you love. Instead of ripping the packet open to use it, poke a hole with a needle in the top corner so that you can squeeze out just as much as you need and the remainder won’t dry out overnight. I’ll be traveling with my packets this week. Bon Voyage!

One thing you never want to forget to pack is a great toothpaste. We love this minty fresh one from Marvis
