From the revival of Doc Martins to grunge-inspired runway shows, ’90s throwbacks are everywhere these days. Not that we’re complaining. After all, it was the decade that spawned girl power and an infinite number of crushes on Zack Morris.
After the New York Times smartly broke down the reinterpreted grunge look in an article last week, we decided to revisit our favorite looks from the ’90s and give them a modern facelift. Cue up your favorite Now That’s What I Call Music! CD and join us on a trip down memory lane.

No one got our teen angst quite like Claire Dane’s Angela Chase in the ’90s classic My So-Called Life. The melodramatic high schooler would never be caught lusting after Jordan Catalano without a swipe of sheer plum lip gloss (preferably in the form of Smuckers Lips Smackers). Channel the moody look with the bolder Beauty Is Life’s raspberry-hued Aubergine Lipstick, jot down your every thought in a Moleskin journal, and frequently cast a forlorn stare into the distance. For modern-day inspiration, check out our lady crush Amanda Seyfried.

What ’90s girl didn’t getting into epic quarrels with her friends over who got to be Ginger Spice? Arguably the feistiest of all the Spice Girls, Gerry Halliwell had the moxie to pull off tangerine streaked locks, not-so-subtle lip liner, and a Union Jack mini-dress. Update the look with a more natural strawberry-blonde hair color (like Jessica Chastain) and emulate Halliwell’s va-va-voom volume with SHU UEMURA’s Volume Maker. For the record: we feel it’s best to leave dark, visible liner in the past. Instead, keep your lipstick tidy with Lipstick Queen Invisible Liner.

Before warning us to steer clear of scrubs, T-Boz, Chili, and Left Eye blew us away with their hit album CrazySexyCool. Make like this fierce trio and score a glowing, drama-free complexion with an ace cleanser and matte foundation. DDF® radiance-boosting Brightening Cleanser does the trick and also staves off blemishes. Pair it with a skin-matching foundation like Vasanti’s Liquid Cover Up Oil-Free Foundation and Concealer. A modern lady who nails it? Hip hop starlet Rita Ora. The Jay-Z protégée possesses covetable skin and frequently plays homage to the ’90s with playful touches like cozy beanies, door knocker earrings, and oversized sweats. And Rita’s signature red lips mase any look feel fresh and current.
