I recently moved from the Pacific Northwest to New York City, which meant I had to do more than your average spring cleaning while packing. Middle school notebooks and the skirt I wore once could not make the trek with me. This also meant cutting down on my beauty products—and if you’re anything like me, you likely have plenty of barely used products that have to go.
My biggest culprit? Bottles of lotion. I had quite the supply of gifted creams that piled up over the years, and moving gave me the motivation to finally toss the non-essentials. That left me with only one lotion each for face, body, hands, and feet. It was a tough task for someone who loves variety in her routine, but I’m happy to know that now when I reach for a bottle, it will be my favorite every time. Here are the top picks that made it onto my vanity in New York:
I’m historically an unscented body lotion kind of girl, but I had to make an exception for Weleda. The formula is really lightweight and while the scent is initially strong during application, it fades to a very subtle smell after just a few minutes. I personally went with the sea buckthorn replenishing lotion to help lock in moisture without having to slather more on throughout the day (important for those of us cursed with constantly dry elbows and knees).
I am very picky about my face cream. My face is sensitive, dry and oily, and acne-prone, so I needed to pick something that was truly my holy grail product. Enter Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré. I bought it after hearing how amazing it was from everyone, and honestly, it lives up to the hype. My skin feels instantly silkier and the cream makes a nice base for makeup too.
I can’t be the only one who has a separate lotion for her hands, right? My pick definitely had to be J.R. Watkins Hand & Cuticle Salve if only for its super portable tin. I keep it on my desk for easy access and quick hand hydration whenever I need it.
Anyone who knows me knows that I am a peppermint fanatic: tea, candy, room sprays – I love it all. So it’s probably no surprise that at least one of my top lotion picks is peppermint scented. Bliss Foot Patrol is everything I need to keep my heels crack-free and, lucky for me, it also softens any newly formed calluses courtesy of New York’s sidewalks.
Another lotion that’s perfect for extra-dry skin? AHAVA Dermud Hand Cream, which uses Dead Sea mud to repair even sensitive skin.
