Week Two: Beauty Routine
When I’m asked how long it takes me to get ready in the morning, my answer of two hours usually triggers a Liz Lemon-inspired "What the what?!" Taking a cue from these responses, I decided that this week would be the perfect time to make some tweaks to my beauty routine. Let me preface by saying that my two hour routine is something I truly enjoy. While it may seem excessive, I love having a leisurely morning without feeling rushed—but I will admit that I could use some more shut-eye. Read on to learn how I streamlined my routine!
On a normal day, I use around 18 products, starting with my day moisturizer and ending with a final coat of mascara. So it’s safe to say it was a bit rough trying to choose what was truly important to my beauty regimen. I started out by choosing between two primers. While I love the Korres Pomegranate Mattifying Primer, I stayed true to my Benefit The POREfessional for the simple fact that it minimizes the appearance of pores. Unfortunately, this was as far as my elimination process went. I still had the urge to pick up every other product and applied them as I usually would.
Learning from my Monday and Tuesday failures of elimination, I set my alarm for a later wake up call than my usual 6:00am. After allowing myself 30 extra minutes of sleep, I put in a quick cardio workout at the gym, jumped in the shower, and sat down to do my makeup by 7:30am. With only an hour and a half to do both my hair and makeup, I was forced to say goodbye to some products. I am proud to say that I have successfully eliminated all the products that seemed redundant. I added three eyeliners to my nix list (I can’t seem to remember how I used all three of these in one morning, but I’m sure I did) along with pressed powder, highlighter, cheek stain, and an eyeshadow stick.
Daring to sleep in even longer, I set my alarm for 7:00am to put my new routine to the test. With an hour to get ready, I said a final farewell to my MAC Skinfinish, moisturizer, bronzer, and one of my mascaras. However, I will admit that I somehow found time to add in a brow pencil and brown eyeliner. Over the course of this week, I learned to love palettes and multitasking products. I am now left with a moisturizing primer, BB Cream, concealer, translucent powder, volumizing mascara, eyeshadow palette, brow pencil and an eyeliner. Using just these products has shaved an hour off my morning routine. While I do miss my casual mornings of moving at my own pace, I’m loving that extra hour of sleep.
