A Spring Hair Makeover: Hello Ginger!

Spring is supposedly in full bloom, which means it’s the perfect time to embrace tiny tweaks that result in jaw-droppingly awesome results. For some Birchbox staffers those changes might include a wardrobe refresh or a breakfast overhaul, but I always welcome a new season with a new hair color.

Inspired by Mad Men's Joan, I took the plunge and dyed my cool-toned brunette locks a warm red hue. To score the ginger-y shade, I trekked to Brooklyn’s High Horse Salon and handed my lame tresses over to hair stylist Allison.

I explained my hair vision to her and was immediately met with a weary look and a long sigh. Apparently, I’m not the only one riding the crimson wave—I was Allison’s fifth ruby request that week. She explained that taking my dark locks lighter was going to cause some damage. A lot of damage, in fact. Words like “bleach rinse” were tossed around, but I reminded unfazed and determined. Unbeknownst to Allison, I’d already mapped out a topnotch post-salon product lineup.

Before going under the foils, I picked up Oribe’s Shampoo and Conditioner for Beautiful Color. The color-saving duo is packed with fruit-based bioflavanoids that are proven to prevent fading. The formulas also use baobab tree, edelweiss flower, and watermelon extracts to restore any moisture loss to color-treating and heat-styling.

For an all-day shield, I added Beauty Protector’s Protect & Detangle to my AM beauty lineup. Applied to damp hair, the lightweight elixir guards against the dulling effects heat of styling—plus the formula is free of color-stripping sulfates.

After living with the change for about a week now, I’m still in love the coppery look. Thanks to my product posse, it’ll last me until my next seasonal refresh.
