Get True Beauty Sleep: Guest Blogger

As I get older, I grow more and more disappointed by the term beauty sleep. Sure, my dark circles aren’t as bad when I’m getting eight hours every night, but something about that phrase seems to imply that you’ll awaken with lustrous locks and glowing skin. 

As with everything in life, when you want to get something done, you have to do it yourself. So if you really want to get real beauty sleep, you’ll have to take matters into your own hands!

Getting a brightened complexion overnight is a tricky one. I’ve worked in the beauty industry for a long time, and one of my most celebrated skills is my ability to “manage expectations” when it comes to recommending skincare. Basically, this just means that I am really good at delivering the bad news that most skincare products—no matter how amazing—will probably have little-to-no effect on your skin for at least three weeks. It’s not crappy products, it’s just biological; our skin cells only turn over every 28 days or so. 

But guess what? There are wizards working in the beauty industry now. They are brewing up these magical masks that have the ability to transform your skin overnight! In all seriousness, though, I honestly cannot wrap my mind around how and why overnight masks such as Korres’ Wild Rose + Vitamin C Advanced Brightening Sleeping Facial and Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask work so well. 

Lustrous locks overnight can be hard to come by, especially if you’re anything like me. I must be doing a lot of tossing and turning, because even when I fall asleep with my hair brushed to perfection, I wake up looking like Robert Smith. This is why I always sleep with my hair in a loose French braid and load a ton of coconut oil on the ends. Now when I wake up, I have perfect waves and smooth ends. 

Even though these tricks may not make us look like we woke up with a full face of makeup and a perfectly styled coif, they certainly are an improvement over regular ole’ beauty sleep!
