Whether you’re looking for celebrity gossip, the best product for frizzy hair, or advice on what to wear to your cousin’s wedding, the gals at Lovelyish have got you covered. This week, a handful of the site’s staffers—Katie Kubiak, Annie Strole, and Allison Wheeler—are bringing their expertise to our blog in a series of five beauty and style how-tos.
Well-done makeup is always nice, but would you rather get compliments on your makeup or on your beauty? Personally, I’m not the kind of gal that can leave the house bare-faced, but it always feels good when someone asks if I’m not wearing makeup when I really am.
To pull off the no-makeup makeup look takes a bit of know-how and all the right formulas.
For flawless skin, choose a buildable coverage foundations with a thin, almost watery consistency. These formulations allow you to choose where you need sheer or full coverage and are invisible to the naked eye. Some of my favorite lightweight foundations are Dior’s Diorskin Nude Foundation and Urban Decay’s Naked Skin Foundation. Brighten up under your eye with a thin but powerful illuminator. Yves Saint Laurent’s Touche Eclat really lives up to the hype—as long as you find the right shade!
Find your perfect flush by matching your blush to the color of your fingertips. Strange, but it works! Cream blushes will always look most natural, but if you’re going the powder route, choose formulations that are finely milled. NARS blushes are a crowd pleaser.
Lip glosses or tinted lip balms are going to be your best bet for a next-to-natural lip shade. Just make sure to select a hue that closely resembles your lip’s natural color.
Make mascara undetectable by using a lengthening and separating formulation with a rubber comb-like brush. This will individually define each lash without weighing them down. My favorite product to get this look is Bobbi Brown’s Lash Glamour Extreme Lengthening Mascara.
If you’re going for the ultimate natural look, you can forgo eye shadow altogether, but if it’s a must-have, make sure to stick to mattes. Even better are matte cream shadows as they seamlessly melt into the skin.
The final and most important trick to achieving the no make-up makeup look is to make sure you’re applying all of the above products in bright, preferably natural, light so that you can really see what you’re doing. And remember that blending is the key to every amazing makeup application!
