Children from Caserio Paseyeneba village, where we built our school.
Last summer, we announced an incredible partnership with Pencils of Promise to build a school in Guatemala. This great non-profit has built 105 schools to date in Laos, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Ghana to provide access to quality education and we were excited to support and help with that mission. During the entire month of August, all purchases made in the Birchbox Shop went directly to this endeavor with the goal of raising $25,000 – the amount it takes to build an entire school.
Well, guess what? We did it!

Thanks to your enthusiastic shopping, we were able to raise enough funds to break ground on October 2 in Pasebeyena—a village in the Boca Costa region of southwestern Guatemala. Prior to the build, classes took place in the school’s kitchen or two temporary structures that were often disrupted by flooding during the rainy season, as well as the occasional unfriendly snake.
The new three-classroom school, which opened on December 13, now provides space for 89 first, third, and fifth graders to learn in a safe and comfortable environment.
Thank you so much for taking part!
