Molinard Tarinologie Workshop
Garden canape lunch at Molinard
This week we tapped Karen Adams, the executive operations manager of the event-based fragrance group Sniffapalooza, to guest blog about some of the best scents she’s discovered on her recent travels. Sadly, today is the last day of her posts, but she is leaving on a high note (get it? Perfume joke.) with a look at Grasse, the fragrance equivalent to Mecca.
Every serious fragrance student and aficionado must make a pilgrimage to Grasse, the perfume capital of the world. On our trip, our days were filled with behind the scenes visits to the laboratories of the major raw materials companies: IFF, Robertet, Mane, and Firmenich. Each company has its own unique philosophy and approach to perfume creation. We followed the perfume process from flower field to the finished juice. Natural materials—flowers, spices, woods—are highly valued and inspire the perfumers. Our scent immersion courses culminated with a chance to create. Molinard, the oldest family owned perfumery in Grasse, invited us to formulate our own personal fragrance. We had a private Tarinologie Workshop under the keen guidance of perfumer Celine. Our petit grain, orange flower, honeysuckle, and patchouli creation, A Patch of Grasse, will serve as a reminder of this special place. After the creating, the Molinard family graciously provided the most exquisite garden lunch—the ne plus ultra of our sensory day.
