4 Complexion-Clearing Tricks for Sensitive Skin

Last week on a blissfully sunny trip to L.A., I had the chance to catch up with skincare expert and pūr~lisse founder Jennifer Yen. In her former life as an actress (she played an evil sorceress on Power Rangers in its first season), Yen wore extradramatic heavy makeup on a daily basis—which stressed out her sensitive skin, in turn causing acne, hives, and rosacea. To help combat these skincare woes, Yen created pūr~lisse—an entire line of sensitive skin-friendly products that rely on two soothing, healing traditional Chinese ingredients: blue lotus and white tea.

After spending an afternoon with Yen and her seriously luminous skin, I knew I had to find out everything that she uses in her personal regimen. So without further ado, here are the top four tricks that she follows to keep her sensitive skin clear and glowing:


Jennifer and her favorite beverage: warm water with a little lemon.

1. Skip the ice and drink room-temperature water instead: Since our bodies operate at a toasty 98.6 degrees, Yen says that drinking warm H2O helps prevent your circulatory system from working too hard. Think of it this way—every time you drink cold water, it’s like dunking your veins in a little vat of ice. To help lukewarm agua go down more smoothly, add a spritz of lemon for a tiny kick of flavor.

2. Cleanse with a gentle, soap-free cleanser and warm water: This way you’re getting rid of impurities, dirt, and all the nastiness of the day without overdrying your skin. Yen’s pur~delicate gentle soy cleanser & makeup remover is a two-in-one, which melts makeup and balances out skin. Use warm water (not hot!) to help loosen dirt and excess oil for a deeper clean.

3. Exfoliate with a natural scrub every 10-14 days: If you’ve got finicky skin, steer clear of harsh products that tend to irritate or inflame. Instead, try this homemade recipe that Yen swears by, and stick to exfoliating just 2-3 times per month: 

Brightening Face Scrub

2 tbsp olive oil (to soften skin)
1 ½ tbsp brown sugar (to gently exfoliate)
½ tbsp fresh lemon juice (to help brighten skin
 and diminish acne scars or skin damage)

Mix together, lightly wet skin, and exfoliate with gentle circular motions (no tugging) for 45-60 seconds.

4. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize: As soon as you’re done cleansing and exfoliating, grab a moisturizer while your skin is still damp. Instead of a heavy lotion, try a gel-based option like Pur~moist Hydra-balance Moisturizer.
