I consider it a Hollywood mystery: Salma Hayek hasn’t aged a day since she debuted in Desperado way back in 1995 (granted, I was in second grade at the time, and my perception of grown-ups may have been a little skewed). Well, it turns out that the Mexican-born actress inherited more than just good genes from her family: she also got great beauty recipes. I recently got the chance to try Hayek’s beauty brand Nuance, which launched in 2011 in CVS stores nationwide. After performing numerous desk trials, I was particularly impressed by the pretty eye palettes and creamy moisturizers, both of which are a major step up from your average drugstore find. Intrigued, I set out to learn more about the backstory behind the brand.
As she set about developing her line, Hayek looked to her grandmother, a cosmetologist who studied in Paris and went on to make her own homemade beauty remedies. Appropriately enough, the products in the Nuance Salma Hayek line combine advanced formulas with personal beauty rituals passed down through the generations. Each product was also inspired by Hayek’s Latin-American heritage and her extensive global travels. Many ingredients, like tepezcohuite, blue agave, prickly pear and lime enzyme, are being used in mass market products for the first time.
I was tickled to learn that Hayek partnered with cosmetic chemists to create and test all the products herself (the thought of the leading lady in a lab coat is amusing, no?). “I wanted to create a line of premium beauty products that were both effective and affordable,” Hayek said when the brand launched. “My partnership with CVS/pharmacy allowed me to be involved in every aspect of product development, bringing my vision to life in making a line that is available to all women.”
Cool, Salma—now maybe you can tell us how we can all look like you.
