As much as we love nail art, we’re better at admiring designs than coming up with them ourselves. That’s why we’ve enlisted Anna Norman, the smarty pants behind Glitter, She Wrote, to be a regular contributor. Every Monday, she’ll be sharing her latest lacquer inspiration—you won’t be satisfied with plain ol’ polish again.
The hot trends last summer were pretty in-your-face (remember all of the screaming neons and chunky glitters we wore so often?). This season, I’m loving more subdued shades in rich jewel tones, plus some added sparkle, of course. Here are five shades to take you through the winter.
Eggplant: While there is a time and place for black polish, it can look severe, especially on fair skin. Deep purple is universally flattering on all colorings and still gives you that dark, vampy look. Try a saturated shade like Cult Nails Vicious, which has a lot of pigment, but not so much that it turns black after a couple coats.
Candy Apple Red: When I’m bundled up in a cable-knit scarf and long jacket, there’s something so classic about a bright red nail peeking out from underneath the layers. Keep nails short and filed and add a layer of your favorite glossy top coat to add dimension to your red mani. I’m wearing Color Club Look Book, my go-to this winter.
Emerald: A top-five list wouldn’t be complete without Pantone’s Color of the Year. Try a rich, elegant green with a classy cream finish, or add some subtle sparkle with a polish like Butter London Jack the Lad. If you’re afraid of wearing green lacquer, emerald is a fool-proof choice.
Dusty Blue: If you thought you couldn’t pull off blue polish at work or at a formal occasion, think again. This season’s muted shades are for you. Try Alessandro Blue Lagoon, a mid-range shade with cool tones—perfect for the cold months of winter.
Holographic: As much as I love a standard glitter polish, I can’t take my eyes off the holographic lacquers I’m seeing this season. The dimension, colors, and light-catching effects are show-stopping. I’m drooling over the pale silver Color Club Harp On It.
