As much as we love nail art, we’re better at admiring designs than coming up with them ourselves. That’s why we’ve enlisted Anna Norman, the smarty pants behind Glitter, She Wrote, to be a regular contributor. Every Monday, she’ll be sharing her latest lacquer inspiration—you won’t be satisfied with plain ol’ polish again.
My nail polish collection has easily passed the 100-bottle mark, but I still find myself returning to the same colors and tools over and over again. When the Birchbox editors asked me to help them put together a nail art starter kit, I knew exactly what I’d include in my list of must-haves.
- Color Club French Tip, a perfect full-coverage white polish. I go through white polish faster than any other color—it’s an ideal base for any nail art design and can hold its own as an updated neutral polish.
- No kit would be complete without a classic shade of red, and Color Club Look Book fits the bill.
- Nail Art Duo Pens in white and black have both a thin brush for stripes and a dotting tool for fool-proof spots. These pens are my favorite nail art tools right now to make stripes, polka dots, French tips, and other geometric designs like triangles. The polish in the pens is slightly thicker than regular lacquer so it’s easy to control, even with shaky hands.
- For one of the most on-trend looks this season, add little pieces of shimmering foil to your tips with the Gold Flakes and Sealer top coat. I’ll be sporting this glam look on New Year’s Eve.
I had so much fun coming up with these nail art designs to try with the kit—I couldn’t stop at just three! Here’s how to get the black and white look I’m wearing above in three easy steps.
STEP 1: Paint each nail with two coats of Color Club French Tip for smooth, opaque coverage.
STEP 2: Open up the dotting tool cap on the black Nail Art Duo Pen. Squeeze small dots of polish onto each nail—a little drop is all you need! Don’t worry if your dots aren’t evenly spaced—mine aren’t perfect, and it looks good all the same.
STEP 3: Let your nails dry completely to avoid smearing the dots, and then top each nail with the Sealer top coat for glass-like shine and long-lasting wear.
I think these polka dots are so mod and just a little bit edgy. What designs would you try with this kit?
