Birchbox staffer Charlie before her cut (left) and after (right).
Back in 2007, I chopped my hair on a whim into a chin-length Victoria Beckham bob. Soon after that I got engaged and panicked—I needed long hair for my wedding! Since then, I’ve refused to cut my hair. It’s now been over two years, and though I can do a mean fishtail braid, I realized it was time for a much needed change.
I’ve been throwing around the idea of cutting my hair for a while now, but I’m low maintenance so the thought of constantly styling short hair made me nervous. (I often sleep with my hair wet, roll out of bed, and head to work with wavy strands). Then I started noticing how ladies like Alexa Chung, Leandra Medine, Olivia Munn have all started rocking the mid-length bob. I thought, “if these busy women can make a mid-length bob work for them, I have no excuse!”
I hopped over to hair guru Jeff Chastain for my new look. After cutting my hair, Chastain showed me how easy (and fast) it is to lightly curl my new cut. He explained that you curl the top pieces away from your face, and the pieces underneath toward your face to give it a more natural bounce. He also used Oribe’s Dry Texturizing Spray all over my hair for extra volume. Since I have that styler at home, I have been spritzing it in my hair before I start curling so my waves last all day long.
Another way to help waves last from morning till night? Hairspray that won’t leave your strands feeling crunchy.
