Long ago, before I was a Birchbox editor, I was a Birchbox subscriber who had never been brave enough to try hair oil. I’d smelled it, I’d put it in my hand, and I had patently decided that I was going to pass. That all changed when I received a sample of Shu Uemura Art of Hair’s Essence Absolue in my box—it smelled so good that I couldn’t not try it. I have a tough time with strong scents, so I was pleasantly surprised to fall so hard for the light floral scent. Flash forward two years , and I use Essence Absolue almost daily to prep my strands before blow-drying and to perk up my mood on particularly lackluster mornings.
Lucky for me, I’ll soon be able to get even more of the intoxicating fragrance. This coming January, Shu Uemura is releasing Essence Absolue Nourishing Hair Fragrance with Oil Pearls, which spotlights camellia oil, the ingredient that’s responsible for the unforgettable scent. Color me excited.
Last week, Shu Uemura gave beauty editors the chance to experience the oil and fragrance at a fun braid bar event inside the John Barrett salon. My stylist Carter crafted insane fish tail braid on my medium length locks (pictured below) and showed me how to use the new perfume-cum-hair oil on a daily basis. All you have to do is lightly mist the fragrance into your hair and rub it down to the ends for a serious kick of shine and protection. This is definitely making it into my Friday night lineup since it handles my scent and hair protection needs in one go.
Here’s a peek at the fun looks that myself and fellow Birchbox staffers Deepica and Rachel L. got at the braid bar event last week:
My epic, messy fish tail braid—I’ve never had anything so intricately done!
Deepica’s gorgeous side braid.
Rachel L.’s chic braided high pony.
