Nicole Richie really needs no introduction (especially to our audience), but we will say this: We’ve loved her ever since The Simple Life days and she’s one of our favorite fashion icons. Her enviable bohemian-chic style has catapulted both of her labels, House of Harlow 1960 and Winter Kate, to sartorial success and back in September, she added fragrance designer onto her ever-growing resume. A mix of fruity, floral, and musky notes, we’re thrilled to be selling her first scent, Nicole, in our Shop.
Check out our interview with the star below where she discusses her fragrance’s inspiration, fave beauty products, and her enviable secret talent.
1. What does this fragrance mean to you?
This fragrance is very special to me. It was inspired by my childhood. I grew up with a traditional Southern mother who loved beauty. Nicole is reminiscent of the scent I associate with my mom and my memories of her—watching her get ready, and her beauty regimen. She would never use just one scent. It was all about the blending and layering of many different lotions, oils, and fragrances.
2. What was the most rewarding and challenging part of creating a fragrance?
The most rewarding part of the process is definitely the finished product. This scent is something that I am truly proud of and something that I myself love to wear. I was very closely involved in the creation of Nicole and took a hands-on approach with its development, helping with everything from the notes that are featured to the packaging and the products’ design. I love that the bottle speaks to my personal design aesthetic and that it’s something that would look beautiful on any vanity table or in any bathroom. The biggest challenge was being able to bring my vision to life, but I think that everyone involved did a great job.
3. What’s your favorite beauty treatment?
I get a hair rejuvenation treatment with Denis De Souza at the Andy Lecompte Salon.
4. Best beauty trick?
I wear very minimal makeup, but I can do a great cat eye. It just takes practice. That and a bold red lip and you don’t really need anything else to look polished and put together.
5. What beauty products are you unable to live without?
Some of my must-have beauty products include MAC liquid liner, it stays on all day and is easy to apply, and NARS lipstick in Jungle Red, which is a great classic red. I also try and take good care of my skin, so I use a ton of moisturizers and SPF daily. I really like Lancer Dermatology Vitamin C Sunscreen SPF 30 and their AM/PM moisturizer. Because my hair is naturally curly, I’m also big on leave-in conditioners and shine serums to help hydrate hair and reduce frizz.
6. What’s the big ticket item on your wish list this holiday season?
I want Nathan Lane and Robin Williams to come to my house and do a private re-enactment of The Birdcage.
7. Do you have any hidden talents?
I’ve become pretty good at doing hair! I do my own every morning and start fresh with wet hair even if I don’t shampoo it. I use Kérastase Oléo Serum and blow dry it straight.
8. The next place that you’re dying to travel to is_____?
India! I’ve never been there, and I’ve always wanted to go.
9. If you could time travel, what period would you visit?
I’m obviously very influenced by the ‘60s and ‘70s, so I would love to travel back to that era and experience all of the great music and fashion.
10. What theme song best describes your life?
Pony by Ginuwine.
11. If you could collaborate with one person, dead or alive, who would it be?
I would do an eyewear collaboration with Elton John (but the 70’s Elton, obviously).
13. You’ve done fashion, fragrance, and jewelry. What’s next?
I could imagine doing a hair care line, but I don’t have any plans at this time. For now, it’s just something I like to do that I have become good at. I also love decorating and home furnishings, so I could see my brands evolving in that direction over the next few years.
