A serious face-off: which of these two treats will win over our staffers?
During the holidays, it seems like everywhere you turn you’re confronted by an army of gingerbread men or a plateful of chocolate chip temptations. I never thought I’d say this, but lately I’ve been experiencing cookie fatigue. Aren’t there other baked goodies that deserve their time in the sugary spotlight during this party-packed season? With a slew of festivities coming up, I set out to find a dessert that was just as yummy and guest-friendly as the conventional cookie, yet more overlooked.
To make the search more fun, yesterday I challenged Ops Associate (and master baker) Nicole to a holiday bake-off. We were both short on time, so we decided to use pre-mixed treats from Stonewall Kitchen, a brand we recently started carrying in the Birchbox Home Pop-Up Shop. I doubled up and made the apple cider and the gingerbread doughnuts, and Nicole made two kinds of whoopie pies: chocolate and red velvet. Today, we brought the finished results to the office and polled our co-workers: which one did they like best?
I kept both plates of treats at my desk for, um, safe-keeping.
Here’s what some of them said:
"The gingerbread doughnuts are perfect for this time of year, and I could imagine my grandma serving them on Christmas Day. But I loved the texture and the buttery frosting of the whoopie pies even more." —Ally, Marketing Copy Coordinator
"I’m a big fan of the chocolate whoopie pies. They have a great flavor and the icing inside goes well with the chocolate." —Andrew, Social Media Associate
"The apple cider doughnuts have a satisfying crunchiness to them, reminiscent of fallen autumn leaves." —Kyle, Assistant Editor
"I’m from Michigan and used to visit the Franklin cider mill when I was growing up, so the apple cider doughnuts make me nostalgic." —Rachel Silver, Community Manager
"I ate too much of the red velvet whoopie pie. They’re really delicious and filling. The gingerbread doughnuts are very moist." —Lorelei, Editor & Video Manager
The winner: It’s a toss-up. The gingerbread doughnuts are a great option for anyone who’s time-crunched since they’re winter-appropriate and only take 10 minutes to bake (just make sure you have a doughnut pan on hand). If you’re going to a party and trying to impress the hostess though, the red velvet whoopie pies are your best bet since they’re intensely decadent and sure to prompt the question “what’s your recipe?”
