While the usual low-slung pony is great for day-to-day, holiday party season provides the ideal opportunity to experiment with a different style. That’s why we’ve teamed up with one of our favorite sites, Beauty High. Each week, they’ll be sending over a few runway shots to inspire you to try something new for your upcoming festive fetes.
This holiday season, the hairstyles du jour aren’t glam curls or impossible-to-achieve updos. If there’s one thing that we learned from the fall 2012 runways, it’s that sleek and straight will always be an old standby, and when done right, can take our look to an entirely new level.
Although the line between shiny and greasy can be a hard one to walk, stylists have shown us how just a touch of sheen can add class to any ponytail or chignon. We drew inspiration from the runway shows below to get us through our packed holiday party schedules and beyond.

For a sleek yet simple style, pull your hair into a side ponytail at the nape of your neck, but make sure you create a deep side part (on either side of your head) first. Create some sheen by using a shine spray or serum to tame flyaways.

Take the ponytail look up a notch: pull your hair straight back on your head (talk about an instant facelift!) by spritzing hairspray on your brush before you begin the whole process. This helps tame strands and gives your hair that pretty sleekness.

Try a low bun at the nape of your neck, but this time with a middle part to show off your bold brows and sparkly holiday makeup. Make sure to slick back the hair behind your ears with just a touch of your favorite anti-frizz serum.

For a new spin on the sleek look, add a touch of sheen to your everyday blowout. The girls at Etro had the beginnings of a finger curl in their hair along their foreheads. To make the style more accessible, simply take 1-2 inch sections on each side and spritz them with shine spray.

This look is the most avant-garde of them all, but if you’ve got a black tie event (and have to get ready in a bit of a rush) it could be the perfect fit. The models at Bottega Veneta had their hair pulled back into buns that were completely slick all around. Apply a medium-hold gel that’s easy to work with to your hair, then brush through and wrap everything into a bun. The product will keep your hair in place and maintain the sleek look that you’re after.
