As much as we love nail art, we’re better at admiring designs than coming up with them ourselves. That’s why we’ve enlisted Anna Norman, the smarty pants behind Glitter, She Wrote, to be a regular contributor. Every Monday, she’ll be sharing her latest lacquer inspiration—you won’t be satisfied with plain ol’ polish again.
As my calendar starts to fill up with holiday parties, I’ve been looking for different ways to add sparkle and shine to my nails. I love a good glitter polish, but I’ve been in the mood to try something new. My latest obsession? Loose glitter.
Applying loose glitter to your nails is more time intensive and a bit messier than using regular glitter polish, so it’s not the most practical manicure for every day of the week—but the results are twice as sparkly, and much for festive for the season. I’m using a kit from Nails Inc., but you can create a DIY version just as easily. Here’s how to get the look:
Start with a solid base nail polish—I’m using the jet-black Nails Inc. Black Taxi, but the color options are endless. Paint one nail at a time so the polish stays wet when you apply the glitter.
Pour a pile of fine-grain glitter (check your local arts & crafts store for this) into a small bowl or tray, or onto a paper plate. While your polish is still wet, gently press your nail into the glitter.
Use a small paintbrush or makeup brush to dust stray glitter off of your cuticles and skin.
Use one to two coats of a quality top coat like Deborah Lippmann Hard Rock Base & Top Coat to seal the glitter to your nail. Once your nails have dried completely, run your hands under the faucet and let the water wash away any stubborn pieces of glitter that may be left on your skin.
This show-stopper mani might not last through a vigorous round of dish-washing, but it will certainly sparkle all night as you sip a cocktail and exchange gifts with the girls.
Would you try this look this winter?
