Do or Don’t: Nail Decals

Based in Washington D.C., Ayren Jackson-Cannady is so savvy that we wished she lived closer to NYC so that we could swap products with her. This beauty writer knows what’s up (she’s written for FitnessGlamour, and Gloss Daily) and we’re excited to have her sharing her know-how and multi-culti beauty expertise as a contributing editor.

You know those mini-heart and rhinestone-star nail stickers that 4-year-olds wear? I love them and wear them too! (Especially these crafty ones from Kate Broughton). I like to haphazardly put one or two in the corner of each nail, and then finish them with a super-shiny clear top coat. My fingers will stay like that for literally two weeks—even longer, if I retouch the topcoat once or twice a week.

I can say, first-hand, that there are techniques you can use to wear these tiny stickers so they look adult, fun, and totally chic. Read on for my tips on wearing the look with a grown-up spin.

Don’t use the whole pack at once. They’re cute and adorable, and it’s tempting to go sticker happy, but try using nail decals as an accent to your manicure.

Do pick a single finger and add a sticker for a subtle pop. For an out-of-the-box look, try using a decal on your ring and thumb together.

Don’t get too wild and crazy with color. A rockin’ bold color (think: Birchbox and Color Club Custom Collection Polish in Tweet Me) is statement enough for grown-up tips. If you add a flying bird or sunburst sticker to that, the sophistication quotient might drop a notch. Keep it more mature and sexy with a neutral, black, or white nail polish topped with your stickers.
