My Must-Have Snack For a 60-Mile Bike Ride

Many moons ago, in my pre-Birchbox days, I took a two week bike trip through Virginia with my good friend Geraldine. We called our epic journey Bikes and Biscuits, alluding to both our mode of transportation and the reward we expected to find at the end of each arduous climb. (Virginia is hilly. Very hilly.)

Now, I’m a snacker on a normal day, but when I’m biking between 35 and 60 miles in one go, I turn into an absolute snack machine. While Geraldine focused on planning our routes and booking hotels, I did what I do best: provisioned. We needed snacks that were portable, energy-filled, and delicious without being sugary. So after careful consideration of all the options, I filled our panniers with lots and lots of Luna Bars. (And emergency chocolate, but that’s another story.) 

We stocked up on our favorite flavors: Oatmeal Raisin and Peanut Butter Cookie for me, Lemon Zest and Toasted Nuts n’ Cranberry for Geraldine. I am not exaggerating when I say that these bars saved our lives (or at least our blood sugar levels) over and over again, as we found the Virginia countryside devoid of food pit stops.

Since that trip, I’ve been an avid Luna Bar fan. In the two years since we started Birchbox my bike adventures have netted out at zero. But I almost always have a few bars stashed in my desk drawer for afternoon snacks and I also love taking them on plane trips. I was excited to send out the bars this month as a lifestyle extra (how nice that I share the same snack taste as goop!), especially since they keep tweaking the bar’s recipe to make it more healthy and filling. Lately, I’ve been on a bit of a Luna Protein Bar kick—the Chocolate Peanut Butter is the perfect post-workout snack because it keeps me satiated and tastes delicious.
