The first time someone told me I looked like Mindy Kaling (a.k.a. Kelly from The Office), I didn’t know who they were talking about. But a quick Google search kicked off my obsession with the comedienne. It started with me reading her book, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, continued with me following her on every social media outlet, and culminated in my addiction to her new show The Mindy Project. It’s also turned into a Birchbox office favorite—who doesn’t like watching a hot mess doctor try to find love?
I’ll be the first to admit that since Mindy and I are both Indian American, I admire her more than many other actresses. I was raised to believe that the best careers were in medicine, law, or engineering, so I never would have thought that an Indian American would star in her own television show. Seeing her crushing stereotypes makes me want to do what I love and pursue what makes me happy, instead of what makes everyone else in my life happy. She’s made me believe that I don’t have to stick to societal norms and that it’s possible to be successful in different industries as long as you’re willing to work hard and not care what others think.
But Mindy’s also proven to be a universal role model. What I really love about her (besides the fact that she’s ridiculously hilarious!) is that she embraces who she is. She’s not afraid of her curves. My favorite quote from her book is when she says that being called chubby wouldn’t be something that bothered her late at night. Instead, the worst thing that anyone could say to her would be calling her unfunny or stupid. (Hear, hear!)
Mindy shows us that there are more important things to worry about in life than being the same size as Gisele Bundchen. She makes it okay to be a size eight and still be crowned People Magazine's “Most Beautiful.” She dazzled at this years Emmy's in an emerald green dress with gold accents. Her skin was glowing, and her look even inspired me to rock a plum lip for fall, which I didn't think worked for my skin tone!
Thank you Mindy Kaling for making it okay to just be me. I’m excited to watch your career grow!
