It may not always seem like it since we talk about beauty and lifestyle so much, but Birchbox is a tech company, too! Which means that we’re always in need of smarty tech gurus. Enter Ashley and Jenn, who both hail from Cornell and the burgeoning NYC startup scene. Before she started, Ashley was Employee number one at Knewton, a startup that recommends online learning content to students. Meanwhile, Jenn not only worked for Etsy, but founded Accompl.sh, a website that helps you track your goals. Color us impressed! Learn more about these ladies below.
Name/Title: Ashley Miller, Software Engineer
Hometown: Merrick, NY
Unofficial role: Healthy-Lunch-Place Picker
Fun fact: I used to DJ a radio show in college. A few friends and I played a mix of music—mostly ska with some indie thrown in. I think we had four listeners on a good night.
Beauty confession: In college I wanted to try out life as a redhead. I dyed my hair using a sassy red shade of dye in the dorm bathrooms. Unfortunately, I didn’t bleach my dark hair first so no one noticed! So much for DIY radical change.
Currently loving: Aveeno Ultra-Calming Foaming Cleanser: It’s really gentle and helps keep my skin from getting red. Yu-Be Moisturizing Skin Cream: Winter is on the way which dries out my skin. This stuff really moisturizes!
Worth the splurge: A facial. One visit goes a long way, plus it’s so relaxing.
Best beauty trick: I never go out without sunscreen! The sun is the worst thing for your skin.
Name/Title: Jenn Vargas, Technical Product Manager
Hometown: Bayonne, NJ
Unofficial role: Wire Framing Expert
Fun fact: I’m really good at six degrees of separation.
Beauty confession: I’ve been known to stand in front of the open freezer after blowing out my hair—it calms the frizzies and cools you down at the same time! In college I would just run outside really quickly in the middle of the winter for the same effect.
Currently loving: Benefit they’re Real! Mascara. It makes my lashes look so much fuller and it’s in that sweet spot where it’s waterproof and won’t smudge all over the place, but comes off easily with a quick swipe of makeup remover.
Worth the splurge: A tech detox vacation. About once a year I try to find a great cabin somewhere, leave all of my technology at home, hide all the clocks, and reset my internet addiction!
Best beauty trick: I’m really bad at doing my nails (especially my right hand), so I usually go completely out of the lines and then rub off the extra in the shower once it dries.
