Get Kristen Bell’s Multi-Braid Half-Updo in 3 Steps

Back in elementary school, half-up, half-down ‘dos and French braids figured prominently in our hair vocabulary (along with the obligatory scrunchies we’ve since shed). Last night, actress Kristen Bell brought both styles out of retirement and combined them with a few strategic mini-braids at the VH1 Do Something Awards. The resulting creation is a little bit ’90s retro, yet fun and totally appropriate for the occasion at the same time. Armed with nothing more than a few rubber bands and bobby pins, we set out to get Bell’s multi-braid style ourselves!

Step 1: First, gather the upper third section into a loose knot (or pony) to get it out of the way. Take a small section of hair and form a mini braid. Secure with a small clear elastic.

Repeat until you have two mini braids on each side of your head and secure with clear elastics. Don’t worry if they differ in width.

Step 2: Divide the top third section of your hair into three bunches and create a French braid, adding pieces as you go. Be sure not to pull hair too tightly—you’re aiming for a loose braid. Secure with a clear elastic.

Step 3: Weave and tuck the mini braids into the French braid using bobby pins. We wrapped the top mini braid over the french braid and tucked it underneath, then secured the lower mini braid below the French braid. Criss cross two bobby pins together for added security. You can loosen your French braid with your fingers for a messier look. Voila, you just created your own version of Kristen Bell’s red carpet half updo!

Great hair starts with the right shampoo—luckily, we’ve rounded up the best formula for every hair type
