As an Indian woman, I’m always on the lookout for products that will work with my skin tone. One brand that I’ve happily discovered through Birchbox is Ada Cosmetics, a line of natural mineral makeup geared toward women of color. To get you just as excited as I am about the brand, I decided to do a Q&A with the owners, Sharon Kinnier and Nana Anu. Here’s the inside scoop on what makes Ada so special.
Deepica: What was the inspiration around your cosmetic line?
Nana: I had found that there was no one making natural makeup for my skin color, so that was the main inspiration. We also have lip colors and eye colors that are specifically geared toward women of color.
Deepica: How has the line evolved since launching it in 2007?
Nana: When we started, we didn’t even have a storefront, just a small kiosk in Boston. During that time, we came across women with all different complexions, from very dark to light. So we shifted gears a little and what started as a brand primarily for African American skin tones has now become a brand for women of all colors. We like to think of our products as multi-ethnic.
Deepica: What’s next for Ada?
Sharon: We are looking to create a cream-based product line. Most likely, we will start with our bronzers. We’re thinking of formulating them with a little bit of oil so that they give the skin more of a glisten than our matte powder bronzers do. Ideally, the formula will glide on, dry somewhat powdery, and will include sun protection. Stay tuned!
