We fell hard for Natalie Alcala last fall, when the LA-based writer and blogger spent a week guest blogging for us. In fact, we loved her posts so much that we asked her to be a contributing editor. In addition to blogging for us once a week, she’ll also be writing for the Birchbox Magazine and keeping us up to speed on all things fashion, beauty, and fun.

For my latest installment of Confessions of a Hollywood Facial-holic (peep my visits to Face Place and Kinara Spa), I took a trip to Beverly Hill’s picturesque SLS Hotel (465 North La Cienega) to experience their award-winning Ciel Spa. Word on the street was that they recently became the first North American spa to exclusively offer the Eve Lom Facial, which was created 25 years ago in London by world-famous facial therapist, Eve Lom. Given that I’ve heard brilliant things about this treatment from fellow beauty buffs, I promptly booked an appointment.
Upon entering Ciel Spa’s facilities, I was immediately taken aback by the staff’s hospitality. I’m definitely not a celebrity, but they sure made me feel like one as they rolled out the hypothetical red carpet to ensure me that from here on out, they were at my beck and call. After jumping into a plush robe and helping myself to a just-made pineapple elixir in the relaxation lounge, I was met by my esthetician, Leah. Once we entered the spa room, Leah shared a bit more about Eve Lom’s treatments and the story behind her product line. A minimalist at heart, Eve wanted to simplify her skincare routine for travel, so she developed a range of purified products that are as efficient as they are effective. My kind of girl! I spend a good portion of the year traveling, so I knew that I had to snatch up her streamlined creations and test-drive their claims.
The Eve Lom Signature Facial experience began with the application of Eve’s acclaimed cleanser, which Vogue once deemed as “possibly the best cleanser in the world.” What happened next was, hands down, my absolute favorite part of the facial: warm paraffin wax. The combination of warmth and hardening of the wax on my skin was unlike anything else I’ve ever felt. It was like lightweight candle wax being gently layered onto my face! Why exactly the experience is so appealing, I can’t explain, but trust me—you’ll be hooked. Leah then applied a decongesting rescue max to awaken the skin and prepare it for extractions. (Side note: During this process, Leah mentioned that I was a bit congested on the right side of my face and asked if I use the phone on that side. I do! She recommended wiping my phone every so often with rubbing alcohol to remove buildup on the screen from makeup residue and inevitable dirt. I loved this tip and am now officially obsessed with wiping it down at the end of every day.)
After extractions, a relaxing acupressure massage, and the application of deliciously scented herbal compressions, my face, neck, and décolletage were ready to face the world. If you’re looking to splurge on an ultra-decadent facial for a special occasion this summer (hellooo, wedding season), treat yourself to Eve Lom at Ciel Spa asap.
