Ever wondered how female athletes manage to look so great, even when they’re pushing themselves to the limit? As I watched Maria Sharapova compete in the French Open this weekend, I was awed by how put together she looked even after hours of grueling play. (I was also awed by her tennis skills but that goes without saying.) It wasn’t just her kickass tennis dress; Sharapova looked fresh-faced and gorgeous in a way that I can’t even accomplish on a regular day. From my non-expert spot on the couch, I think she was wearing an SPF tinted moisturizer, SPF lip balm, and some seriously waterproof mascara.
While we rarely sport makeup at the gym, there are those times when workouts call for a little more effort (Saturday vinyasa with that hot yoga instructor, perhaps?). Here are our recommendations for looking healthy and fresh, whether you’re on the world stage or the treadmill:
Skin: After a workout, there are two things you don’t want: clogged pores and a sunburn. Beauty brand rae cosmetics makes it their job to outfit women against all the beauty obstacles that come with exercise. Their Climate Control Mineral Tint is a standout: built to fight heat and perspiration, it’s not only all-natural, but also noncomedogenic and has SPF 20.
Eyes: If you must wear eye makeup to the gym, do yourself a favor and think waterproof. Try CoverGirl’s NatureLuxe Water Resistant Mousse Mascara for a smooth application and Urban Decay’s 24/7 Eye Pencil for long-wearing color. For a formula that really won’t budge, we love blinc’s tubing mascara.
Lips: A no-frills lip balm is your best bet for the workout routine. Try Pangea Organics’ Lip Balm or a basic Chapstick.
Hair: The goal in a nutshell? Keep it out of your face! For those lacking sporty-chic visors (see tennis star above) a ponytail holder and headband are the the next best thing. Try Twistband hair ties for a nonslip grip and their matching skinny headbands to tame bangs.
Would you ever wear makeup to a workout session?
Don’t let post-gym hair be a bummer. Here’s how to keep your ‘do looking gorgeous even after your workout.
