I just found out about a disturbing new bridal trend: engaged ladies looking to lose weight before their wedding are now dieting by being fed through a tube in their nose. Crazy, right?
Last week, the New York Times reported on this insane new carb free, 800 calorie a day diet. It’s administered (under a doctor’s supervision) for 10 days via a tube that goes from the nose, down the esophagus, and into the stomach. Your body loses weight because it goes into a state of ketosis, where you burn fat instead of sugar. (Side effects can include bad breath, dizziness, and constipation.) While the practice is only now growing in popularity in the U.S., it’s frequently been used in Italy and Spain as a quick and easy way to shed pounds before a big event.
I don’t know about you guys, but I find this practice kind of terrifying. While I understand the desire to get svelte before you walk down the aisle—a 2007 study found that 70 percent of engaged women want to lose roughly 20 pounds by their big day—crash dieting is never a healthy plan of action.
What do you think of this bride-tube-dieting trend?
