How To Get A Newspaper Manicure: Nailing It

Operations associate, Loren, has a thing for nails- and we can’t blame her. We love reading about new finishes and fun techniques, so we thought we’d give her a weekly slot on our blog to wax poetic about all things manicure (and pedicure!) related. Check back every week for Nailing It, Birchbox’s dedicated polish series.

What’s black, white, and read all over? The answer: your nails! When I want to mix things up a bit, I love a newspaper manicure. (Dare I say, it’s an intellectual look?) Depending on what base color you choose, you can create totally different styles. One of my favorite base colors for this design is light pink, because it gives your nails a love letter, romantic sort of feel. You can also go the gray route for something very editorial seeming, or even paint your digits bright yellow for an outrageous take on the trend. Here’s a step-by-step tutorial on how to perfect this awesome technique:
What You Will Need:
  • Base coat
  • Base color
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Small bowl
  • Cotton balls
  • Newspaper
  • Top coat
Step 1: Get started by painting your nails like normal. A base coat is always important and choose a base color you’re excited about. This time around, I decided to use a beautiful gray polish with a mild gold shimmer from Inglot Cosmetics called 981
Step 2: Once your nails have completely (and totally!) dried, cut the newspaper into small pieces that fit the width and height of your nails.
Step 3: Fill the small bowl with enough alcohol to soak your nails. Dip the nail that you are going to apply the newspaper to for at least five seconds.
Step 4: After soaking, have your newspaper square ready so that you can apply it right away. Place the square on the nail, press, and roll. Make sure not to move the print as you roll or it will smudge the ink. If the newspaper sticks to the nail, simply take a cotton ball dipped in alcohol and press it on the back of the paper (kind of like a temporary tattoo). After a few seconds, you should be able to peel off the newspaper very easily.
Step 5: Once all your nails have gotten their literary fix, simply add a top coat, and that’s it!
This technique is easy peasy and is a great way to jazz up a mani. For an even more unique look, try using a newspaper in a different language like Japanese or Spanish!

Will you be trying this extra, extra funky technique?
