The Ops Team is Blowing Up!: Team Intros

We’ve had a slew of new people come on board recently, but the ops team seems to be growing at record speed. Here’s an introduction to our four newest associateswe’d be lost without them!

Sonia Porter, Operations Associate

After she graduated from Princeton University last year, we were lucky to scoop up this Ivy League grad and call her a member of our Birchbox Team.  While in school, she studied Anthropology and spent some time in Cape Town putting together her thesis. She is great at all things operations, but when she’s not at work, she likes to read and run.

Hometown: Boston, MA

Fun Fact: My college roommate of four years was severely arachnophobic, so I’ve honed an incredible talent for spider trapping. You won’t even know it happened…the spider won’t even know it happened…until it’s all over.

Beauty Confession: As I confessed to the entire company on my second day here at Birchbox, I can’t braid my own hair. It’s my deepest, darkest beauty secret—I’m just glad it’s out in the open now.

Currently Loving: Amika Obliphica Hair Treatment. I got it in my Birchbox a while back and ever since I got around to trying it, I can’t stop using it. It smells nice and makes my hair smooth and shiny.

Worth the Splurge: Manicures! I love doing my own nails, but sometimes professional help is necessary.

Best Beauty Trick: NARS Bronzer in Laguna. It was my first bronzer in high school and I’ve stuck with it ever since. Tricks people into thinking you’re tan in the middle of winter.

Crystal Chang, Operations Associate

Crystal came to Birchbox from another start-up, her friend’s company called Runway Passport, which covers fashion weeks all over the world. Before that, she was studying International Relations at Oxford University in England. Luckily for us, she is here now. We cant wait to try her famous white chocolate macadamia nut cookies that she promises to bring in soon.

Hometown: Kendall Park, New Jersey

Fun Fact: I love comic books. If anyone ever wants to talk to me about comic books, I will drop everything I’m doing. Clearly, you deserve my undivided attention.

Unofficial title: Hoarder in the Making

Beauty Confession: I recently started trying a lot of DIY skincare recipes. Lately, it seems like I’m putting more fruit on my face than in my mouth! Some things work, some things don’t, but it’s definitely a fun process. Plus, it never hurts to accidentally end up smelling like strawberries all day.

Currently Loving: This Befine Night Cream. I just got some to try last night and my normally very dry skin felt great when I got up this morning.

Worth the Splurge: A really good mattress! They drastically increase the quality of your sleep (beauty or otherwise) and they’re especially great if you have a bad back. The only problem is that it’s awfully hard to leave your own warm slice of heaven for work on those cold, winter mornings.

Best Beauty Trick: Using coconut oil in my hair. By the time my hair is this long, it’s normally all split ends, but I’ve started putting coconut oil (ends to mid-shaft while damp) on it post-shower and suddenly, I’m split-end free!

Audrey Van Roosen, Operations Associate

Audrey came to Birchbox after working for an advertising agency. She already loves the people here and the creative, passionate atmosphere. When she is not at work, she loves listening to music and going to concerts. And though no one can believe it, she hates bacon.

Hometown: Avon, CT

Fun Fact: I’m half Polish and a quarter Dutch. Also, I’m seriously addicted to sugar-free Red Bull.

Unofficial title: Wild Child

Beauty Confession: I’ve never dyed my hair and won’t until I start graying. I love my natural color.

Currently Loving: Pure Illumination 2-in-1 Hydrating Lip Therapy. It’s like chapstick and a gloss in one, but it isn’t sticky.

Worth the Splurge: Miracle Skin Transformer Treat & Conceal Eye & Face. It cut two steps out of my beauty routine and actually stays on all day.

Best Beauty Trick: Dry shampoo. Washing my hair too often damages it, so I live on Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo.

Kimiko Ninomiya, Operations Associate

Kimiko was working as a technical administrator for a large computer retailer before starting at Birchbox. Although she loves going back home to California (especially if it involves wine tasting), she has grown to love New York City. She especially looks forward to the summers here and loves running through Central Park.

Hometown: Oxnard, California

Fun Fact: I love vegan desserts and pizza.

Unofficial title: The Genius

Beauty Confession: I only wash my hair about once a week. It’s not gross, I swear. Klorane Dry Shampoo works wonders.

Currently Loving: Juice Beauty Blemish Clearing Serum is changing my life. Also, black nail polish. Always.

Worth the Splurge: Treating myself to haircuts at Bumble and bumble’s downtown salon. The view is incredible and I always leave feeling relaxed, refreshed, and with beautiful hair, of course.

Best Beauty Trick: I’m horrible with liquid eyeliner so I’ve gotten very good at doing winged liner with a kohl pencil. The trick is keeping the pencil very sharp. I create an outline of the shape I want, fill it in, and follow up by brushing on black shadow with a liner brush.
